Erik Lie, professor of finance in the Tippie College of Business, saying the bankruptcy filing by General Motors will be of little help to the company's long-term prospects (Radio Iowa News, June 1).

"Leisure is terra incognita [for many modern workers], so we’re highly reluctant to embrace the possibility of free time. We want to save our jobs, and I predict we will. We’ll get back to work, and we’ll forget the possibility of leisure."

Dave Patton, assistant director of UI Outdoor Programs, speaking about the Wilderness First Responder certification (a.k.a. “woofer”) course hosted by Touch the Earth, which is part of the University of Iowa’s Division of Recreation Services, at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area (Iowa City Press-Citizen, May 26).

“We just don’t want to say to people, ‘There is nothing more that can be done.’ If you have reduced vision, you need tools to help you function at your highest potential.”

Mark Wilkinson, vision rehabilitation director at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, discussing potential research on whether audible GPS navigation can help motorists, including those with vision problems, stay safer behind the wheel (Omaha World-Herald, May 19).

Gary Christensen, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, expressing his excitement about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s potential to jump-start research (Des Moines Register, May 18).
