Offices and Awards

Paul Abramowitz, associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Pharmacy, received the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

Timothy Brennan, Samir Gergis Professor of Anesthesia in the Carver College of Medicine, received the Frederick W. L. Kerr Basic Science Research Award from the American Pain Society.

Jeff Cox, professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named a fellow-in-residence at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study.

Jay Currie, clinical professor of pharmacy practice and science in the College of Pharmacy, was selected as chair-elect of the APhA–Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Section of Community and Ambulatory Practice for 2010–2011.

Bill Doucette, professor of pharmacy practice and science in the College of Pharmacy, was selected as a Fellow by the American Pharmacists Association.

Craig Just, adjunct assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering and associate research scientist for IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, has been elected to the inaugural National Engineers Without Borders–USA Leadership Council.

Malik Juweid, professor of radiology in the Carver College of Medicine, is a member of the College of CSR Reviewers.

Hosin "David" Lee, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been elected the 40th President of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association.

Patrick O’Shaughnessy, associate professor in occupational and environmental health in the College of Public Health and in civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering, was honored with the 2009 Best Paper Award from the Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society.

Stanley Perlman, professor microbiology in the Carver College of Medicine, was elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.

James Ponto, clinical professor of pharmacy practice and science in the College of Pharmacy, received the APhA-APPM Presentation Merit Award.

Richard Rosenquist, clinical professor of anaesthesia in the Carver College of Medicine and director of the Center for Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia, received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Pain Society.

Leslie Schwalm, professor of history; gender, women's and sexuality studies; and African American studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award from the State Historical Society of Iowa for her book, Emancipation's Diaspora: Race & Reconstruction in the Upper Midwest.

Lectures and Presentations

Greg Carmichael, Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering in the College of Engineering, was recently a key speaker at the Honor Day for the MeteoWorld Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
 
Kathryn Chaloner, professor and head of the Department of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health, delivered the annual Hari Shankar Lecture at the University of Northern Iowa on April 29.
 
K.K. Choi, Roy J. Carver Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, who also is professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, World Class University Program (WCU) at Seoul National University, will present “Are Deterministic Engineering Optimum Designs Reliable?” June 16 as part of the WCU Distinguished Lecture Series.
 
David Perlmutter, dean of the School of Journalism in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, presented “The Social Media Challenge in Serving Dual Career Couples” June 3 at the eighth annual International Dual Career Programs Conference at The University of Iowa; and “Are Blogs Changing Health Care?: Young International Doctors React to Social Media” May 24 at the International Journal of Arts & Sciences Conference for Academic Disciplines at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Robert Schneider, professor of prosthodontics in the College of Dentistry, was an invited speaker at the International Team for Implantology World Symposium in Geneva, Switzerland. His presentation was titled “Prosthetic Reconstruction of the Resected Mandible.”
