Offices and AwardsGarry Buettner, professor of free radical radiation biology in the Carver College of Medicine, received the lifetime achievement award from the Society for Free Radical Biology Medicine. Mary Cohen, assistant professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, received the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Music Educators’ Adult Community Music Education Special Research Interest Group. Carolyn Colvin, associate professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, received the Dan Chávez Beyond the Horizon Award from the Iowa Culture and Language Conference. Pam Creedon, professor of journalism and mass communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will receive Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy from the Commission on the Status of Women of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Steve Duck, professor of communication studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was selected as a recipient of a Distinguished Scholar Award from the the National Communication Association. Megan Foley Nicpon, assistant professor of counseling psychology in the College of Education, received the New Voices in Creativity and Intelligence Research Award from the University of Kansas. Juan Pablo Hourcade, assistant professor of computer science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received the 2010 Human-Computer Interaction Hero Award from the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory. Malik Juweid, professor of radiology in the Carver College of Medicine, served on the Assay Validation Committee for the AACR-FDA-NCI Cancer Biomarkers Collaborative. Mitch Kelly, clinical associate professor of psychological and quantitative foundations in the College of Education, was selected by the UI student leadership of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for distinguished membership in the society. Kristen Missall, associate professor of psychological and quantitative foundations in the College of Education, was named associate editor of the Journal of Early Intervention, and was invited to be a participant in the School Psychology Research Summit in the Society for the Study of School Psychology. Keith Mueller, professor and head of health management and policy in the College of Public Health, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the National Rural Health Association, and served on the Special Emphasis Panel to review applications to the Office of Rural Health Policy, Health Resources and Services Administration. Chris Ogren, associate professor of educational policy and leadership studies in the College of Education, was elected director of the History of Education Society. Lia Plakans, assistant professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, was elected member-at-large of the International Language Testing Association. Leslie Schrier, associate professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, received the National Dissertation Advisor Award from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and was selected as a member of the Research Task Force on Future Needs in Foreign Language Education by the U. S. Department of Education. Carol Klose Smith, clinical assistant professor of rehabilitation and counselor education in the College of Education, received the Outstanding Supervisor Award from the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and was elected vice president of higher education by the Iowa School Counseling Association. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research in the College of Dentistry, has been selected as a member of the University of Iowa 2010–2011 class of Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Academic Leadership Program (ALP) Fellows. Bonnie Sunstein, professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, was named a fellow for the Symposium for the Study of Writing and Teaching Writing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Melissa Lai Tee Teoh, assistant research scientist in the Carver College of Medicine, is the recipient of one of two research mini-fellowships by the Society for Free Radical Biology Medicine. William Therrien, associate professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, received the Teacher Education and Special Education Publications Award from the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children. Peter Thorne, professor and head of occupational and environmental health in the College of Public Health, presented “Endotoxin, Pattern Recognition Receptors, and Asthma” at Utrecht University in the Netherlands for their distinguished lecturer series on June 17. Pamela Wesely, assistant professor of teaching and learning in the College of Education, received the Outstanding Research Paper Award from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota. Susannah Wood, assistant professor of rehabilitation and counselor education in the College of Education, received the Research Award from the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Lectures and PresentationsChris Coffey, codirector of the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center, was a participant in two presentations—“The Effect of an Unplanned Sample Size Reestimation on the Type I Error Rate” and “Achieving the Benefits of Both an Internal Pilot and Interim Analysis in Large and Small Samples”—May 15 at the Society for Clinical Trials Meeting in Baltimore. Chris Coffey, codirector of the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center, and Dixie Ecklund, associate director of the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center, served as faculty members for the full-day Essentials of Randomized Clinical Trials workshop May 15 at the Society for Clinical Trials Meeting in Baltimore. Malik Juweid, professor of radiology in the Carver College of Medicine, gave an invited lecture June 18th at the 50th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Lymphoreticular Tissue Research in Nigata, Japan.
