Offices and Awards

Deborah Dawson, professor of preventive and community dentistry in the College of Dentistry, was elected to membership in the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research.

Lesanne Fliehler, director of publications in the Tippie College of Business, and Bruce Johnson, professor of accounting in the Tippie College of Business, received a 2009 APEX Award for Publication Excellence in the Most Improved Magazines and Journals category.

Jean Frauenholtz, UI clinical research assistant in the Carver College of Medicine, received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Chet Culver.

Philip Kutzko, professor of mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received a 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.

Timothy Starner, associate professor of pediatrics in the Carver College of Medicine and asthma specialist with University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Chet Culver.

Cherished Portraits, a program at UI Children’s Hospital that provides private, caring professional portrait sessions at no charge for infants and children with life-threatening illnesses or who are facing the end of life, received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Chet Culver.

Lectures and Presentations

Noel Estrada-Hernández, assistant professor in counseling, rehabilitation, and student development in the College of Education, presented “Can We Help Our Students with Assistive Technology? Results of a National Survey” to the National Council on Rehabilitation Education in San Antonio.  

Noel Estrada-Hernández, assistant professor in counseling, rehabilitation, and student development in the College of Education, and John Wadsworth, associate professor in counseling, rehabilitation, and student development in the College of Education, presented “Meeting CORE and CACREP Standards in the Rehabilitation Counseling Curricula” to the National Council on Rehabilitation Education in San Antonio.  

Dennis Maki, professor and chair in counseling, rehabilitation, and student development in the College of Education, presented “Supervision in Counseling: Ethical, Theoretical, and Practice Aspects” at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan, Merida, Mexico.

Wayne Richenbacher, professor of cardiothoracic surgery in the Carver College of Medicine, provided the presidential address, “Conflict of Interest: Eliminating Bias and preserving Trust in Human Subjects Research,” at the annual conference of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs in May in Dallas.

Audrey Saftlas, professor of epidemiology in the College of Public Health, will participate as a panel member for the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference: Diagnosis and Management of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) Sept. 22–24 at the Natcher Conference Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.
