Update—October 12:Simulations help med students grow more comfortable communicating with patients with disabilities
An experiential training program funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health and facilitated by the Carver College of Medicine and the UI Center for Disabilities and Development is giving third-year medical students greater confidence when communicating with patients with disabilities or their family members. “Patients with disabilities are not just a small fraction of the population,” says Scott Lindgren, professor of pediatrics in the Carver College of Medicine who oversees the simulation project. “We want our medical students to be comfortable communicating in all situations—patients with disabilities comprise one very important group.”
President Mason gives budget update following governor's announcement on state revenueFollowing recent word from the state's Revenue Estimating Conference, Governor Chet Culver has issued a 10 percent across-the-board midyear cut to all state agencies and departments. For Iowa's public universities, that translates into a $59.8 million budget reversion for FY2010. The University of Iowa’s share of that budget reduction is $24.7 million. President Sally Mason puts the current budget situation in some specific contexts.
University to host Oct. 12 public forum on Voxman, Clapp, Hancher replacement optionsThe University of Iowa will host a public forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12, on possible replacement options and sites for Voxman Music Building, Clapp Recital Hall, and Hancher Auditorium. The forum will be held in Macbride Auditorium. Joe Hibbard of Sasaki and Associates will facilitate the forum and present information gathered since the last public forum on this topic, which was held July 9, before opening the floor to public comments.

Student garden volunteers, UI groups successfully complete circle of life
Millions of people across the world are working hard to protect the environment and its people by “going green,” and groups across the University of Iowa campus are doing their part in the green movement. One particular group of students—in collaboration with IMU Food Services, the Office of Sustainability, Facilities Management, and the UI Environmental Coalition—tend to vegetables grown in a large garden on the west UI campus and delivered to the University for ingredients in meals. The student garden, which opened in April, runs on a “circle of life” model—the students grow the food, it is transported and used on campus, some of the scraps are composted, and the compost is used on the garden, along with compost donated from the Iowa City Landfill.
Photo feature: Making music in UCCThe UI School of Music continues to adapt to its post-flood situation. Most instrumental music studios and faculty offices are housed in a newly constructed space on the second floor of University Capitol Centre. This space includes practice rooms, chamber rehearsal rooms, and organ practice rooms. A new student recital hall and classroom also have been constructed on the first floor of the mall.
