Changes to UI Choice plan give
UI employees incentive to seek care at renowned UIHC programs

Changes to the UI Choice health insurance plan for calendar year 2010 will provide a financial incentive for University of Iowa faculty and staff to use University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) providers and facilities for care—modifications critical to the vitality of UIHC and its 9,200 employees.

UI Choice participants—94 percent of whom live within 30 miles of UI Hospitals and Clinics—will benefit from seeking care at one of the nation’s top-rated providers while also providing UIHC with additional revenue streams that can help preserve UI jobs.

The guiding principles that anchored The Iowa Promise 2005–10, The University of Iowa’s strategic plan, led the University to raise faculty salaries, strengthen undergraduate education, and increase the diversity of its faculty, staff, and students.

Since The Iowa Promise was created, the campus has new leadership personnel in place; has received new strategic priorities from the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; has dealt with the devastating flood of 2008; and has experienced the effects of national economic retrenchment.

With these factors in mind, six strategic initiative task forces are convening to help articulate the University’s strategic vision and priorities in education, research, and service for 2010–2015.

Ignacio Ponseti, creator of innovative, nonsurgical clubfoot treatment, dies at 95

University of Iowa leaders today remembered the lasting legacy of Ignacio Ponseti, University of Iowa professor emeritus of orthopaedics, whose pioneering nonsurgical, low-cost clubfoot treatment has benefited tens of thousands of children worldwide. Ponseti died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, following a sudden illness. He was 95.

The homecoming atmosphere at The University of Iowa wouldn't be complete without the energy provided by the UI Alumni Band. From a whirlwind practice and parade march on Friday to performing before a nationally televised football game on Saturday night, the band was having a ball. fyi tagged along with the band to bring you the sights and sounds of a wonderful weekend.

Music has been a positive factor through-
out Mark Bernat’s life. The new performing arts coordinator in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Project Art program wants patients to feel that same feeling while receiving world-class care at the University’s health care complex. Bernat, a professional musician trained at the Juilliard School of Music, is excited to bring new ideas to Project Art’s performing arts component, which was created to offer diversion and stimulation through music, dance, and theater.
