"You could hear a gasp in the room as some people realized they had been lied to." Terry Boles, assistant professor of management and organizations, recounting the moment in a recent study at which she revealed to her subjects that other subjects had not told the truth in the course of a mock negotiation (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Jan. 1).

"Anything that increases the awareness of authentic literary culture is good." Frank Conroy, director of the Writers’ Workshop, finding cause for celebration in the current spate of Hollywood movies (Wonder Boys, Rolling Stone, Almost Famous, Quills, Finding Forrester, etc.) about writers (USA Today, Jan. 11).

"The assumption is that this will eventually happen." Carol Scott-Conner, head of surgery, looking forward to the first human trip to Mars, for which she serves on the medical committee (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 14).
