George W. Forell
Dr. George W. Forell, Carver Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UI's School of Religion is recipient of the Third Faith and Learning Award
IOWA CITY, Iowa--Geneva Lecture Committee is pleased to announce the recipient of this year's Faith and Learning Award, Dr. George W. Forell, Carver Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the School of Religion at the University of Iowa. Dr. Forell is a world renowned theologian, speaker and ethicist. He is the author of 18 books and over a hundred articles and reviews and has taught at colleges and seminaries throughout Europe and North American as well as Japan, Hong Kong and India. He is a former director of the School of Religion(1965-1971)and was the chosen speaker for the Geneva Lecture Series in 1992.
The award, now in its third year at the University of Iowa, will be presented on Friday, September 17, 1999 at W10 Buchanan Auditorium, Pappajohn Business Administration Building in conjunction with the public lecture of movie producer Ralph Winter of Glendale, California. Previous winners of the award include Dr. James B. Martins, cardio-electro-physiologist of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa and Mr. Marvin Lynch, former director of Personnel at UI.
The reason for creating the award, according to Jason Chen, convenor of the Geneva Lecture Series, is to promote an awareness of the relevance of the Christian faith to the academic endeavor. The award is presented each year to a past or present member of the UI community who has demonstrated some degree of successs in this area. The task of integrating faith and learning can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including teaching, mentoring, research, writing, speaking and involvement in the program of Christian or secular organizations. The recipient of this award is a person who has demonstrated through one or more of these activities that the life of the mind is an important context for the service of God.
