TOP MEDICAL EDUCATOR RECIPIENT OF FAITH & LEARNING AWARD
IOWA CITY, Iowa--George V. "Geordie" Lawry, M.D. recognized as one of the University of Iowa's top medical educator is the recipient of this year's Faith and Learning Award. The award was created seven years ago by the Geneva Lecture Committee to foster an awareness of the relevance of the Judeo-Christian faith to the academic endeavor. The prestigious award will be presented to Dr. Lawry on Friday, November 14 at the Buchanan Auditorium of the Pappajohn Business Administration Building in conjunction with the public lecture of novelist Marilynne Robinson. .
As a gifted teacher and compassionate health caregiver, Dr. Lawry exemplifies to his students the high calling of a physician. He has been chosen consistently by medical students and residents as one of the top teachers in UI's College of Medicine. He has been honored as "Teacher of the Year" by second and senior year medical students ten times. In 1995 he was awarded the Lewis D. Holloway Award for Research and Health Sciences Education and was also the recipient of UI's Collegiate Teaching Award. in 1998, he was UI's nominee for the Alpha Omega Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award.
Dr. Lawry earned his undergraduate degree at Stanford University in 1971 and his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He completed a Rheumatology Fellowship at the Wadsworth VA-UCLA Hospital in 1981. From 1981 to 1993 he entered a multi-specialty private practice and held a voluntary clinical faculty position at Stanford. He joined the faculty as a clinician-teacher at UI's College of Medicine in 1993. At UI he is also actively involved in the Christian Medical Association. He and his family are members of the New Life Community Church in Coralville.
