First Winner of the Jason Chen Faith and Learning Scholarship Announced
Rev. Jason Chen is a well-known figure around the University of Iowa campus. For thirty-four years he served as Director of Geneva Campus Ministry (GCM) at UI. When he retired at the end of 2004, the GCM Board decided to honor him by offering a scholarship in his name. They set out to raise an endowment fund, the interest of which would be used to finance the scholarship. It is called “The Jason Chen Faith and Learning Scholarship,” emphasizing a key theme of Jason’s ministry.
The GCM Board announces the first winner of the scholarship: Brian Underwood of Johnston, Iowa. He is an active member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church in Des Moines. Brian plans to enroll as a freshman this fall in the Tippie College of Business. According to Ed Laarman, current Director of GCM, “Brian is an outstanding student, a proven leader, a compassionate individual, and a person of strong Christian faith. We are delighted to offer him this first of what we plan to be many scholarships given in the future.”
The Jason Chen Faith and Learning Scholarship is for undergraduate students who are entering the U. of I. for the first time as freshmen or transfer students. The grant is $500 per year, renewable for up to three additional years. Therefore, “within three years we could be funding as many as four scholarships a year,” says Laarman.
