Elmer Yazzie's Philosophy of Art

"Art is the way to live" --Elmer Yazzie

I believe the goal of the artist should be to create unique works that visually remind observers of some meaningful area of life. Spiritual balance is important in order to create unique works. Each production should be understood intellectually by it's creator. All people are attracted to what is unique and quite often will ask for an interpretation.

I pray almost every day for ideas. When I worship God, my sketchbook is in one hand and my Bible is in the other. It is important for me to dialogue with people who live artistically. Mary times as I paint, songs are sung and prayers are spoken. There is meaning in all my works. I believe that each piece has a purpose and is created for someone.

Elmer Yazzie was born into the "Waters Come Together" Clan for the "Tall House" clan. His childhood was spent on the Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico and in the "border town" of Farmington. He began to visually express his artistic interest while in elementary school. After receiving his B.A. in Art Education, he started teaching at Rehoboth Christian School in 1976. Currently, he is teaching part-time and creating his own art. Three large mural projects totaling 7,600 square feet and painted between 1979 and 1989 are what strengthened his commitment to being an artist. Painting with handmade yucca brushes popularize this Navajo artist. Many people throughout the United States enjoy his lectures on culture, art and spirituality. His wife, Sharon, and their four children reside in Rehoboth, which is in northwestern New Mexico.
