The College of William and Mary’s Center for Geospatial Analysis is seeking an SDE engineer for a newly created position that requires the creation and distribution of an original geographic and demographic database describing school attendance zones for school districts throughout the United States. The database is known as the School Attendance Boundary Information System (SABINS) funded by NSF grant # SES 0921794. The SDE engineer will work collaboratively with faculty and a GIS programmer (the job search for this position is in process) in this effort. The SDE engineer will take a leadership role in the design of a new database that will consist of digital geography delineating school attendance boundaries; this GIS data will be integrated with demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education and disturbed via the National Historic GIS ) housed at the Minnesota Population Center.
This is an operational position in an academic setting; the College of William and Mary is located in Williamsburg, VA. The position is 12 months with funding in hand for a second year option. The possibility of extension pending extended or new grant support beyond two years exists. The position comes with full benefits. Applicants who have demonstrated success in writing and obtaining grants from public and/or private entities are highly desired.
Experience using ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Desktop, Server & ArcSDE) in combination with Microsoft SQL Server is necessary. Applicants must have a thorough understanding of the ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase model and the topological capabilities of the model. The position requires database design, database development, QA / QC, and SDE support and the candidate must be able to architect, develop, and manage databases created and/or deployed on-site. Database systems supported may include but not limited to Microsoft SQL Server with the ESRI Spatial Database Engine (SDE), and Microsoft Access. Required experience includes five years of on-the-job spatial database development experience. A Masters degree is required (although a Bachelors degree with lengthy experience in an SDE administration will be considered) and it is an advantage to have a degree in geography (GIS or Remote Sensing), mathematics, environmental science, computer science, IT/engineering or to have a social science degree that emphasizes quantitative approaches. GIS (ASPRS, GISCI) / Microsoft (MCSE, etc.) certifications are beneficial. The College of William and Mary’s Center for Geospatial Analysis is seeking a GIS Programmer for a newly created position that requires the creation of an original spatial and demographic database describing school attendance zones for school districts throughout the United States (known as SABINS). The programmer will work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students in this effort and will take a leadership role in the design of an online-interface that allows school district administrators to digitize their school boundaries remotely. Other programming tasks such as automated procedures to integrate Census Data and SABINS datasets, identify and correct topological database errors within the SABINS data, as well as other assigned tasks will be completed as required.

Extensive knowledge of ESRI GIS software (ArcMap 9.x, ArcSDE, ArcIMS, ArcObjects), ArcGIS Server (.NET). Working knowledge of VB.NET and C# and mastery of object oriented concepts. Knowledge of SQL, Python or related languages is necessary for programming and modeling in GIS. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including proficiency in writing technical documentation and the ability to give presentations on GIS tasks users. Ability to train and supervise students in GIS software and basic GIS techniques (such as georeferencing digital images, digitizing polygon features, address matching, building or following topological rules, editing existing polygon features, editing attribute tables, tabular joins, spatial joins, unions, interpolating data across misaligned polygon feature classes, and other common GIS tasks.) The position requires basic knowledge of U.S. census data (e.g., the ACS) and educational data sets (e.g., the Common Core of Data) and an understanding of TIGER/Line topology or complex cadastral datasets. Ability to communicate with personnel in local school districts, county GIS offices or private vendors who maintain digital GIS data or analog representations of those data to successfully acquire school attendance boundaries for the SABINS project. A Bachelors degree in one of the following disciplines: GIS, mathematics, computer science, IT/engineering, statistics or related field that emphasizes quantitative approaches and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. GIS (ASPRS, GISCI) / Microsoft (MCSE, etc.) certifications acceptable in lieu of a formal degree in GIS. Candidates will be asked to submit samples of their prior GIS coding projects. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is recruiting a tenure-track, Assistant Professor in landscape ecology and human-environment interaction for appointment in August 2010. Required qualifications include: 1) a doctoral degree in geography, ecology, environmental science or a related field at the time of appointment; 2) the ability to develop and maintain an externally funded research program; 3) the ability to teach geographical and environmental science courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; and 4) the ability to contribute to the department’s interdisciplinary mission.
The successful candidate will play a major role in the human-environmental components of the rapidly growing PhD in Geography and Urban-Regional Analysis and contribute to the department’s inter- and intra-disciplinary teaching and research missions, including the PhD program in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems. The Department of Geography of Hunter College is unique within the City University of New York and is the largest and among the most technologically advanced geography programs in the NYC metropolitan region. The department includes 17 full-time faculty members and more than 20 adjunct lecturers. Hunter College offers bachelor’s degrees in geography and environmental studies, a master’s degree in geography, and a graduate-level certificate in Geographic Information Science. Within the geography major the department also prepares students for a career in teaching social studies at grades K-12. The Department typically enrolls more than 150 undergraduate majors and about 40 masters students. The Criminal Justice Research Center at Ohio State University announces an opening for a Senior Research Associate with substantive interests in neighborhood effects and problem behaviors (e.g., adolescent drug use, delinquency, and other risk behaviors). The Research Associate will work on a National Institutes of Health funded project examining neighborhood and activity space effects on health and risk behaviors as part of an interdisciplinary team including sociologists, geographers, and statisticians. The Research Associate will be responsible for daily management and supervision of graduate research associates and will have an integral role in the conceptualization and organization of data analysis, formulation and preparation of papers for publication, report writing, and overall data management and documentation.
Eligibility: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant social science or related discipline, experience using advanced statistical methods and working with large-scale survey data, and excellent writing skills. Experience with the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey or Geographic Information Systems software and spatial analysis are desirable.

Elmhurst College Department of Geography and Geosciences announces a full-time tenure-track assistant professor position in GIS/Geospatial Technologies and Physical Geography to begin at the start of the academic year 2010-2011.
