"I
pursue several themes in my research. The first, concerns the development
of approaches that help researchers and decision-makers find answers to
computationally complex geographic questions through the use of high performance
(parallel) computing."
Though such computing environments were, until fairly recently, considered to be exotic, it is now quite common to construct them from networked clusters of ordinary personal computers. A second theme arises from the application of computer-based solution processes to ill-structured geographical problems. These problems tend to be complex and contain aspects that cannot be directly captured in models. As a consequence, decision-makers often wish to evaluate tradeoffs among their criteria and visualize the effects of these tradeoffs. I am working on a variety of evolutionary programming approaches that generate tradeoffs that are good with respect to the stated criteria of decision-makers. Ill-structured problems often embody numerous dimensions that transcend the expertise of any given individual, and as a consequence groups are often convened to address them. In a third research theme, I am looking into ways that GIS can be extended so that groups, rather than individuals, can effectively use technology to explore problems and work toward consensus. Finally, I have active interests in studying how geographic information technologies are used to compromise personal privacy and in the development of new approaches to geographic visualization, environmental modeling and methods of spatial analysis.
