"Kathleen Stewart is interested in modeling geospatial semantics, temporal GIS, moving objects research, and ontologies and their role for GIS."
College of Liberal Arts and Science Dean's Scholar 2010-2012
Kathleen Stewart is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Iowa. Dr. Stewart's research interests relate to modeling geospatial semantics, including moving objects research, event modeling for dynamic GIS, reasoning about spatio-temporal phenomena over multiple granularities, and geospatial ontologies and their role for geographic information system design. She is also interested in topics relating to hazards research, especially as it relates to floods. She teaches courses on spatiotemporal data modeling, geographic database design, geovisualization, and fundamentals of geographic information science. Support of her research has been provided by agencies including the National Science Foundation, IARPA, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency among others.
Dr. Stewart is an associate editor for Computers, Environment, and Urban Systems. She serves on the editorial board of The International Journal of Geographical Information Science (IJGIS), Transactions in GIS, the GIS section of the journal, Geography Compass, and the new open-access journal Journal of Spatial Information Science (JOSIS). She currently serves as Chair of the Research Committee of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS).
She was a co-organizer for the symposium on Space-Time Integration in GIS and GIScience held at the AAG Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA in April 2011. Previously she served as the program co-chair for the International Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT 2009) held in Aber Wrac'h, France in September 2009, and co-organized the workshop on Temporal GIS: The Past 20 Years and the Next 20 Years at GIScience 2008. She gave the invited Transactions in GIS plenary presentation at the AAG Annual Meeting 2012 and also gave an invited presentation at the Workshop on movement pattern analysis at GIScience 2010. She is a member of numerous program committees including the program committee for Seventh International Conference on GIScience (GIScience 2012), the 10th International Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT 2011), and the 10th International Conference on Geospatial Semantics (Geos 2011), among others.
We are very pleased to announce a new NSF-support IGERT award, “Geoinformatics for Environmental and Energy Modeling and Prediction (GEEMaP)” to the University of Iowa. See here for more details. This will be a very exciting new opportunity for graduate study in our Department.
Check out:COSIT 2009 with great photos of the conference site. We had an excellent lineup of tutorials and workshops as well as the main conference so please visit the COSIT website. COSIT Proceedings are now available.
