Choropleth Advisor: Shading


The shading scheme used on a choropleth map is used to convey a sense of magnitude to the user.

Darkness is a surrogate for the magnitude of the data in each of the enumeration areas.

Dark Areas = High Values

This is an example of a monochromatic choropleth map.

It is wise to avoid the use of 100% black as a shade, since it tends to visually dominate the map.


Shading -- Color Color is commonly used on choropleth maps. In this example the hue (color) and value (lightness) are being manipulated to convey a sense of magnitude to the user.
