Research

At The University of Iowa we conduct research of social and biophysical systems and the events that shape the world in which we live. Our focus is on understanding these dynamic systems with a special emphasis on human-environment interaction and the science and technologies that are needed to analyze, model, and visualize geographic processes. Examples include:

Environmental Studies

We are currently examining human-environmental interaction in areas such as ecosystem dynamics, environmental policy, environmental sampling, land use/land cover change, and computer simulation. Some examples of current environmental geography research at Iowa include:

  • Affects of global climate change on mountain ecosystems

Health and Society

According to the World Health Organization better environmental management could prevent 13 million deaths each year. We are studying the complex relationships that exist among health, the environment, development, ethics, and equity. Some examples of current health geography research at Iowa include:

  • Advanced techniques for the analysis of spatio-temporal patterns of health and the environmental factors that affect health
  • The health effects of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in Iowa
  • The relation between air pollution and health in Delhi , India
  • The relation between cancer and access to health care in Iowa

International Development

Recognizing we are now a global society, the U.S. economy, culture, health, and environment are intricately connected to almost every other nation on earth. We study the processes, politics, and policies that form and affect these connections. Some examples of current research in international development at Iowa include:

  • Assessing changes in access to health services in developing countries
  • Cultural struggles over human rights in the U.S. and abroad
  • The geography of microfinance in India
  • Grassroots political organizations in Nigeria
