WELCOME BACK for the beginning of spring classes.  Hopefully, you had a relaxing break and are refreshed to meet the challenges a new semester brings.  To the new students in the department (both undergraduate and graduates) - welcome aboard.  New graduate students include Neo Buenger McAdams, Amanda Parker and Jamie Parker.  gg

AAPG/SEG SPRING BREAK STUDENT EXPO: MARCH 13 – 15, 2008 is an annual job fair to bring together students and energy-related companies for formal interviews in a lively, energetic, and hospitable atmosphere. It’s three days of exploring and networking...... complete with a poster contest, optional short courses, field trips, and a regional SEG Student Challenge Bowl. Not to mention, GREAT FOOD! Two sets of cash prizes will be given to reward the top three "Geology" posters and the top three "Geophysics" posters. The three levels of prizes are as follows: - 1st Place, $500.00 - 2nd Place, $250.00 - 3rd Place, $100.00.  Submission deadline for resumes and abstracts is March 1st, 2008.  Further info is available at http://geology.ou.edu/expo/expo2008.php.  CTF

 

HONORS, AWARDS, ETC.:

·         Dr. Mark Reagan received a National Science Foundation Grant (2 yr., 1/1/08-12/31/09, $117,090); " Collaborative Research: A 210Pb Paradox?".

·         Loren Wehmeyer has successfully defended his PhD dissertation.

ASSISTANTSHIP/FELLOWSHIP/GRANTS/SCHOLARSHIP/EMPLOYMENT/OPPORTUNITIES/

SYMPOSIUMS:

·         Kansas Geological Survey – Geologic Sample Research Technician: Duties include Thin-section preparation, Sample preparation for SEM, Rock preparation, Inventory, etc.  Qualifications: 1) At least one year of coursework, training, or job experience that is rock-base, and training or experience in optical mineralogy; and 2) At least six months demonstrated expertise in preparation of polished thin sections of rock samples.  Application procedure: Online announcement/link to apply: http://www.kgs.ku.edu/General/jobs.html (position # 00008379); cover letter, resume/vita and three references.  First consideration given to applications submitted on or before February 3, 2008.  More detailed information available in the main office.

·         2008 AAPG Foundation Grants-in-Aid Program is available to geoscience graduate students who may require funding for their research project.  Grants are based on merit, and in part, on the financial needs of the applicant.  Factors weighed in the selection of successful applicants include: qualifications of the applicants as indicated by past performance, originality and imagination of the proposed project, support of the department in which the work is being done, and perceived significance of the project to petroleum, energy minerals and related environmental geology.   Monetary awards up to a maximum amount of $2000.  Grants are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student’s thesis work, such as fieldwork, laboratory analyses, etc.  Applicants are required to submit official academic transcripts by mail before the deadline.   The deadline for the 2008 program closes on January 31, 2008.  Applications are available online through their website for the 2008 program at  http://foundation.aapg.org/gia/index.cfm .

·         2008 - 2009 CLAS Scholarship Competition: The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences may award up to 43 scholarships collectively worth over $112,000 to students continuing in the College during the 2008-2009 academic year. Twenty-eight of these scholarships are open to all liberal arts and sciences students and fifteen are for select liberal arts and sciences majors.  To be eligible, students must be: (1) currently enrolled undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, (2) seeking their first baccalaureate degree, and (3) continuing in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as undergraduate students in 2008-2009. Please note some scholarships involve both merit and financial need criteria, some specify Iowa residence, some specify full-time student status, and some specify class status. The specific criteria for each scholarship can easily be accessed via the College's web site at http://www.clas.uiowa.edu/students/scholarships/index_2.shtml.  Application forms will be available November 1, 2007 on-line at http://www.clas.uiowa.edu/students/scholarships/app_forms.shtml. The deadline for students to apply is February 1, 2008.

·         Chicago Botanic Garden’s Conservation and Land Management Fellowship Program80 5-month paid fellowships in conservation biology and natural resource management.  Working with the Bureau of Land Management (BLB) and the National Park Service (NPS) predominantly in the western states.  Fellows participate in a 1-week training course in late May in Chicago; training includes BLM/NPS orientation; Endangered Species Act and associate programs; Plant and animal identification and monitoring; GIS and mapping; and Topographical map reading and GPS skills.  Applicants must send a letter of interest, official transcript(s), resume and three letters of recommendation to Cynthia Scott, CLM Fellowship Program, Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL 60022.  Applications are due February 1, 2008. 

·         Research Fellowship in the Rockies –Rocky Mountain National Park and the Rocky Mountain Nature Association are co-sponsoring a research fellowship opportunity for one graduate student to spend 3-4 months in Rocky Mountain National Park.  For a brochure with additional information, see Georgie in the main office or visit their web site at www.rmna.org for more information and application guidelines.  Application deadline is February 1, 2008.
