BIOLOGY & GEOSCIENCE SEMINAR:   On Friday, April 25, at 4 PM in Kollros Auditorium, 101 Biology Building East, Kevin Padian, University of California-Berkeley, will present “How did dinosaurs grow, and how do we know?”  Coffee and tea at 3:30 PM in the lobby of BBE.   CAB/MS/PHH

 

QUATERNARY BROWNBAG:  On Wednesday, April 23, at 1:30 PM in room 231 TH, Brittany Guzzo Geoscience graduate student, will present “Episodes of Midwestern USA Stalagmite Deposition Correlated with Major Stage Boundaries of the Marine Oxygen Isotope Record.”  RGB

 

UHBC BANQUET MEETING: The banquet will be here in just about a month, and the committee is still looking for volunteers to help with planning.  We need people to join us next Wednesday, April 23, in room 36 at 5:30 pm to give us your ideas for the night's events.  ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND and the more the merrier!  BG

 

M.S. and PhD THESIS/DISSERTATION DEFENSES:

·         Michelle Stocker will be presenting her MS thesis and defending on Friday, April 25 at 8 AM in room 231 TH.  The title of her thesis is "The relationships of the phytosaur Leptosuchus Case 1922 with descriptions of new material from Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona."

·         Danielle Jannusch will be presenting her PhD dissertation and defending on Monday, April 28 at 9 AM in room 231 TH.  The title of her dissertation is “Systematics and Paleoecology of Devonian Stromatoporoids from the Cou Falls, Iowa City, and Osage Springs Members, East-Central Iowa.”

·         Susan Kilgore will be presenting her MS thesis and defending on Monday, April 28 at 2 PM in room 242 TH.  The title of her thesis is “Age, Distribution, and Lithology of the Sheldon Creek Formation, North Central Iowa."   gg

 

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Upcoming departmental events:

·         Friday, May 2th, 4:00 PM, 125 TH - Departmental student awards will be presented immediately prior to the Friday seminar.

·         Friday, May 9th, 3:30 PM, Departmental Photo - Please congregate on the front steps of Trowbridge Hall.  All Geoscience faculty, emeriti, adjuncts, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students are encouraged to be in the photo.

·         Friday, May 16th, 5:30 PM, the UHBC Banquet.   gg

ASSISTANTSHIP/FELLOWSHIP/GRANTS/SCHOLARSHIP/EMPLOYMENT/OPPORTUNITIES/

SYMPOSIUMS:

·         Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) has several scholarships available:

o   Minority Scholarship – Awards for undergraduate women who are African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.  Application deadline is May 15, 2008.

·         Ben Meadows Natural Resource Scholarships - 2008 is the third year Ben Meadows will award two Natural Resource Scholarships to eligible college juniors or seniors. If you are a college Junior or Senior enrolled in a natural resource program you may be eligible for one of two scholarships from Ben Meadows. The scholarships, one for academic achievement and one based on leadership, are each worth $2,500. Applications for the 2008 awards will be accepted March 30 - June 30.
