EDUCATION
Univ. of California Berkeley Geophysics 1966 69 Ph.D., 1969
Univ. of California Berkeley Seismology 1963 66 M.A., 1966
Univ. of Iowa Physics, Math 1959 63 Honors B.A., 1963

SPECIALTIES
Geoelectrical geophysics (DC sounding, time- and frequency-domain electromagnetics, spectral induced polarization, and ground penetrating radar), especially as applied to water resources, glacial deposits, tracing contaminant plumes, and mineral exploration. Processing and interpretation of regional aeromagnetic, radiometric, and gravity maps in terms of geology and mineral deposits. Planning and costing optimum geophysical surveys. Viscoelasticity of rocks. Earthquake seismology.

STATUS
Retired from U.S. Geological Survey. Owns and manages a small organic vegetable farm near Tiffin, Iowa. Does occasional lecture, field work, and committee work as Adjunct Professor in the Geosciences Department, University of Iowa.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
1974-2001     Research Geophysicist     U.S. Geological Survey     Denver, Colorado
Work at USGS can be divided into three major assignments:

• FY95-01 Geoelectrical Field and Laboratory Work. Included directing Geoelectrical Assessment Methods research team, performing ground surveys and monitoring airborne surveys in Michigan and Illinois for the Central Great Lakes Geologic Mapping Coalition (CGLGMC), doing field surveys and follow-up laboratory work involving acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Rocky Mountain West, doing several field surveys for USGS Water Resources Discipline, studying gasoline spills at Oregon Graduate Institute test site, and 7 weeks of gold exploration in Saudi Arabia. Geophysics editor for Hydrogeological Journal. Highlights: explanation of GPR bright- and dim-spots over LNAPL spills, industrial archaeology of a foundry at Denver Federal Center which showed a spectral EM signature for concrete footings, identifying acid-generating rocks in mine waste by their SIP signatures.

• FY90-94 Branch Chief, USGS Branch of Geophysics. Directed geophysical work of more than 150 employees located in Denver CO, Menlo Park CA, and Reston VA. Managed yearly budgets of ~$10M, over half of which involved contracts to other (non-USGS) federal agencies, including DoD, DoE, EPA, NASA, BLM, and BIA. Sat on many USGS management committees, making sure appropriate geophysics was included in program work, and that all work was coordinated and completed in a timely manner. Helped start Center for Environmental Geophysics and Geochemistry, Denver. Outside reviewer for DoE on geophysical work at Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Depository, Nevada.

• FY74-89 Regional Geophysical Interpretation. Prepared and interpreted aeromagnetic, radiometric, and gravity maps in terms of local geology. Typical assignments involved evaluating public lands for possible mineral and energy deposits. Most studies included field mapping with teams of counterpart geologists and geochemists. Study areas included southern Texas (uranium), Utah and Colorado (base metals, uranium, oil shale), south-central Alaska (base and precious metals, Trans-Alaska Crustal Transect), Pennsylvania (eastern Triassic basins), and South Carolina (Charleston earthquake zone). Developed a practical way, now widely used, to calculate potential fields for “2 ½ -D” source bodies. Wrote a large number of programmable hand-calculator programs to do common geophysical calculations, and co-edited two volumes of such programs published by Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Served on many USGS technical committees and taught or co-taught many “practical geophysics” courses for federal employees. Served on American Board of Engineering Training accreditation visits to Colorado School of Mines and Montana Tech.

1969-1974     Assistant Professor of Mining Geophysics     Columbia University     New York NY
Developed and taught a series of graduate and undergraduate courses in engineering geophysics. Taught Engineering Differential Equations, a core course for all engineering sophomores. Led field trips to upstate New York, Long Island, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Summer, 1966     NASA Trainee, Branch of Planetology     Moffitt Field     Sunnyvale, California
Simulated lunar soils in preparation for landing a man on the moon.

1963-1969 Graduate student University of California Berkeley, California
As Teaching Assistant, developed and taught introductory “Geology for Geology Majors” course. Located earthquakes and helped set up seismographic stations for Berkeley Seismological Center. Besides geology and geophysics work, took most of the continuum mechanics courses of the Applied
Mechanics curriculum in Mechanical Engineering. Thesis topic: computer modeling of viscoelastic structures under Hawaiian volcanic chain.
