About the Project
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in association
with the University Consortium for Geographic Information Sciences (UCGIS), published
a Request for Proposals aimed at establishing collaborative relationships between
U.S. universities and universities in developing countries. The purpose of the
program is to further international cooperation on the development and application
of GIS-based urban indicators for urban policy research.
The project seeks to develop a web-based training program on the application
of geographic information systems to urban housing, environment and vital statistics
data for the purpose of establishing relationships between indicators of housing
and the environment and child health for small areas of cities in India and Nigeria.
Other training modules will focus on issues of access to and patterns of use of
clinic services. The project also will address problems associated with making
these materials accessible and useful to professionals in India and Nigeria.
The instructional modules in this series are designed for students and professionals
interested in health in communities who want to be able to use GIS in practical
situations around the globe. Through the exercises in the modules you will learn
progressively more detailed and useful ways to examine your health and environment
data using GIS to improve the health of people and their environment. Data sets
are provided for each exercise but users are encouraged to follow through by providing
their own datasets.
