Role of Faculty, Staff, and Students

 PROFILE: DEREK WILLARD

Derek Willard was appointed Special Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations and Associate Vice President for Research in December, 1999.  In this capacity, he is the primary contact for federal relations activities and he is the University contact for inquiries from the Board of Regents.  Prior to his appointment he served 17 years as Associate Vice President for Research.  In addition to his governmental relations responsibilities, he continues to support the University's research mission on selected issues through the Vice President for Research. 

He is a faculty member in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry where he was Director of Behavioral Sciences before assuming his present positions. 

Prior to coming to the University of Iowa he was a faculty member at the United States Air Force Academy. His research interests are focused upon communication theory and research, including legal and ethical aspects of communication systems, and communication in health care systems and settings. He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island (BA 64), the University of Pennsylvania (MAC 68) and the University of Iowa (PhD).
