CONTINUING EDUCATION

Graduate College and Continuing Education

  • 3092 students throughout Iowa are currently enrolled in degree programs delivered throughout Iowa through remote sites, ICN, microwave relay and the Web including:
    • Masters degrees in Social Work, Business Administration, Public Health, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Nursing, and Library and Information Science
    • Bachelor degrees in Nursing and Liberal Studies
    • Doctor of Pharmacy degree
    • Community College Teaching Licensure

College of Dentistry

  • Over 1800 state dental professionals participated in College of Dentistry Continuing Education distance education programs. An average of 25 sites throughout Iowa were used for each program.

College of Education

  • More than 450 of Iowa’s helping professionals from 41 Iowa Counties attended the 24 th Annual Summer School for Helping Professionals (ASSHP)—the state’s largest workshop of its kind. For over two decades, ASSHP has offered programs and leadership that have enhanced the personal and professional development of helping professionals, which has resulted in an improved quality of services offered within our communities across our state.   • One of the Belin-Blank Center’s major missions is to help teachers learn to recognize, encourage, and teach gifted and talented students. By enabling teachers to work more effectively with the gifted students in their classrooms, all the children in Iowa’s classrooms can benefit. The Belin-Blank Center has worked with hundreds of teachers in Iowa, many of who are now leading advocates for gifted education in their communities.
  • Summer Workshops for Educators—each summer at least a dozen courses are offered for Iowa’s teachers.
  • Advanced Placement Teacher Training Institute—professional development available for 18 different AP courses.

  • Talented and Gifted (TAG) Endorsement—In 1992, the State of Iowa approved the requirements for a pre-K through 12 Talented and Gifted (TAG) Endorsement for anyone designated as a teacher and/or coordinator of programs for the gifted. The TAG Endorsement allows teachers to work with gifted students of any age even if their certification is for a specific age group. The TAG Endorsement provides educators with the essential tools to promote the talents and well being of gifted students. Research has shown that outstanding teachers of the gifted are familiar with different learning styles, understand the developmental nature and needs of gifted children, and understand current theory and knowledge about gifted education

  • The Biennial Henry B. & Jocelyn Wallace National Research Symposium on Talent Development reaches hundreds of educators interested in the educational advancement of talent development.
  • CASMA (Center for Advanced Studies in Measurement and Assessment) and ACT, Inc. cosponsored a conference on educational testing challenges for nearly 200 educators, testing professionals, faculty, students, and policy makers from across the country. It focused on understanding how radically the testing landscape has changed over the past 50 years.
  • In an effort to enhance the learning experiences of all elementary education pre-service teachers and graduate students in literacy programs, Literacy Education Assistant Professor Gail Boldt and Associate Professor Kathy Whitmore created the Exemplary Literacy Teaching Archive Project. With a $35,000 Arts and Humanities Initiative Grant, the project filmed classroom literacy lessons in several Iowa school communities, then archived the instruction for future learning and training on DVD. The DVD is being distributed to all the teachers involved in it.

 College of Engineering

    • The College’s Center for Technical Communication conducts Summer Seminars in Workplace Writing for Iowa companies -- single-day, goal-oriented workshops designed for engineering professionals that provide customized instruction to help corporate employees write more productively on the job.

Carver College of Medicine

  • Nearly 11,000 physicians and health care employers were trained in Continuing Medical Education offered by the Carver College of Medicine throughout Iowa.

College of Nursing

  • Educational programs by nurse anesthesia students were conducted in four sites
  • The Certification Center administered exams to 4000+ Nurse Aides in 99 counties
  • The Certification Center manages statewide curriculum for 400+ auxiliary personnel in long term care in 99 counties
  • Faculty and staff trained case managers and informal care givers for dementia care in 31 counties
  • Thirty-four continuing education offerings serving 2,350 individuals from 86 counties were conducted

College of Pharmacy

  • 328 statewide participants received continuing education offering from 32 classes and another 214 from 40 home study offerings.
 College of Public Health
  • The College of Public Health is offering the Certificate in Public Health Program. The Certificate in Public Health is designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills in basic public health competencies. The Certificate requires 12 hours of stipulated course work. All courses needed for completion of the Certificate are offered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) at locations all across Iowa, the Internet, and via Polycom Video Conferencing Technology. Currently 52 students from all across Iowa are enrolled in the Certificate of Public Health Program.

The Iowa Center for Public Health Preparedness (ICPHP) awarded 28 scholarships to the Certificate in Public Health Program through its Public Health Workforce Development Scholarship Program. Recipients were selected by Iowa Association of Local Public Health Agencies, Iowa Public Health Association, Iowa Environmental Health Association and Iowa Department of Public Health.

  • The Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety and WORKSAFE IOWA offered 20 continuing education courses attended by 549 trainees (about 835 person-days) from July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003. Five hundred twenty four trainees were from Iowa representing 48 counties across the state. Trainees included physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, human resources personnel, administrators and other health professionals such as emergency medical technicians and certified medical assistants.
  • 250 geriatric mental health administrators and providers were trained in a program offered by the Department of Health Management and Policy.
  • 200 substance abuse treatment providers in a 5-state region were trained in workshops offered by the Department of Community and Behavioral Health.
  • 300 gambling addiction treatment providers were trained on the diagnosis of gambling disorders through the Department of Community and Behavioral Health.
  • The Upper Midwest Center for Public Health Preparedness sponsored a conference in April 2003 titled “Revisiting the New Reality: Improving Iowa’s Preparedness Capacity”. Over 200 professionals participated in this state wide event. Participants learned about preparedness initiatives that had been implemented at the local, state, and national levels to better prepare for emerging public health threats in Iowa. This event provided an opportunity to identify issues and strategies to enhance preparedness efforts.

Fifty-three professionals from 34 Iowa communities participated in the Center’s second cohort of the Train-the-Trainer Program. During an eight-month period, training was provided to increase participants’ knowledge in public health science, emergency response systems and community leadership in crisis.

Ten one-hour educational programs were offered as part of the Center’s Grand Round Series. There were a total of 421 attendees for the 2003 series. Each program was broadcast to more than 30 Iowa Communications Network (ICN) sites. The Grand Rounds programs were also simulcast via streaming video on the internet and archived on the Center’s website for retrieval upon demand. In addition, sessions are available via videotape, CD-ROM, DVD, and audiotape.

 

College of Law

  • The College of Law sponsored ten accredited continuing legal education (CLE) programs (totaling 57.75 hours of “state law” programming, 34 hours of “federal law” programming, and 3 hours of ethics programming). Two of these were co-sponsored with the Iowa State Bar Association. 734 attorneys attended a College of Law sponsored CLE program; these attendees were from 57 different counties in Iowa and 12 different states. UI CLE programs provided attendees with a cumulative total of 4,419 “state” credit-hours, 2,598 “federal” credit-hours, and 257 “ethics” credit-hours.

  • Nine members of the College of Law faculty and staff made presentations at UI-sponsored CLE programs ( Professors Estin, Brinig, Ward, Kurtz, Blanck, Cain, Sidel and Hill and Adjunct Professor Koontz).
