- 1,468 patients in 73 Iowa counties served by visiting nurses from UI Homecare
- The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, in partnership with the Iowa Lions, initiated a “Come to Your Senses” program to screen infants and children (6-48 months of age) for loss of sight and hearing. Nearly 10,000 children in Iowa were screened at 686 sites during the 2003-2003 academic year. This screening is available to children in all 99 Iowa counties and is free.
College of Dentistry
- 5746 indigent patients served at the Broadlawns Dental Clinic in Des Moines
- 300 patients served by the College of Dentistry’s award-winning Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit, with visits to 10 facilities, as well as to homebound hospice patients and elderly adults.
- 218 children seen through the Head Start program centers in Keokuk, Burlington, Fr. Madison and Mt. Pleasant.
- 96 persons with disabilities are seen by 28 local dental providers and Pediatric Dentistry faculty and Residents in 25 counties.
- 335 patients were seen by Preventive and Community dental students and 597 patients were seen by Pediatric Dentistry faculty and Residents at the Davenport Community Health Center.
- 877 low-income children are seen at Des Moines Health Center by Pediatric Dentistry Residents.
- 20 of Iowa’s communities are served by the Spencer Cleft Palate Clinic.
- 305 infants and toddlers were seen in the Infant Oral Health Programs (Johnson and Linn County WIC Clinics) by Pediatric Dentistry faculty and residents and senior dental students.
- 46 children were examined and referred by the Pediatric Dentistry residents for the Migrant Dental Program in Williamsburg.
- 88 of Iowa’s counties are served by the Colleges Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine for evaluation of surgical specimens.
College of Nursing
- HomeSafe provided nurse case management services to older persons in 4 counties
- Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center and Iowa Practice Improvement Collaborative served Iowans with addiction issues in 31 counties
- Clinical service was provided by nurse practitioners or advanced practice nursing students to clients in 30 counties
- Nursing students are in 351 clinical agencies in 75 counties
The College of Pharmacy
Eight full-time pharmacists located in Family Practice sites in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines, Des Moines, Iowa City, Mason City, Waterloo and Sioux City have been preceptors for over 60 students and 5 pharmacy residents as well as 145 medical residents while working in unison with faculty from the College of Medicine in providing services in these clinics with over 194,835 patient visits.
