The University of Iowa Water Polo Team is a competitive collegiate club water polo team. We are recognized by The University of Iowa Office of Student Life as an official student organization and are sponsored by the University of Iowa Recreational Services Department. We are funded in part by the Student Government and Recreational Services, however, the majority of our funding comes from club fund raisers as well as membership fee's of $40/semester, and private and corporate donations.

The majority of our members are University of Iowa undergraduate students. In addition, we also welcome graduate students, UI faculty and staff, as well as local residents with a passion for water polo. All members must be 18 years of age or older or must have parental consent to participate. However, in order to be eligible to participate at Big Ten Tournaments or NCAA Tournaments you must be a undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Iowa. Both men and women are welcome to join. Many of our new members have backgrounds in high school, club, and/or NCAA water polo; some have competitive swimming or life guarding backgrounds; some just love the water. No water polo experience is necessary to join, however we do require all members to be in good physical health and must be able to swim and tread water in deep water for sustained periods of time.

  • Format

Our team is growing fast and we are in a transitional phase. Recently we have divided into separate men's and women's teams due to the increasing numbers of students who wish to play. Both the men's and women's teams participate in the Big Ten Conference. In addition the men's team participates against many great plains division team (our former conference) during the spring semester. The men's team is currently working on recruiting, growth, improvement, and team unity to build for next years Big Ten season. The men's Big Ten season runs from the end of August until late November. As for the Women's team, Spring marks the start of the Big Ten season in which they worked last fall training and building for their season. Our women's team will compete against other women's teams in the Big Ten from mid February to late April.

  • Practices

Practice times depend on a number of factors that include the season, upcoming tournaments, social events, finals week, and pool time. Usually we try to practice 3-4 times a week for two hours each practice. Practices are mandatory for full time members. Each practice will include endurance training, technique drills, game time strategy, and scrimmages. If you wish to join you may attend any practice at any point during the school year. No water polo experience is necessary to join, however we do require all members to be in good physical health and must be able to swim and tread water in deep water for sustained periods of time. For more information email an officer or attend a practice with absolutely no obligation to join. We are always looking for new recruits and we hope to see you at the pool!
