A leading example of the "reputation based" search engines is Google. We've been checking the ranking of hmd pages in Google searches over the last 3 months, and have found that they consistently rank high, in several cases being in the top 10, in a list of several thousand links - A Google search for the word "orthopedics," for example, retrieves a list of about xxxxx sites, with the hmd Orthopedics page consistently being one of the top 5 sites on the list. Other hmd pages also rank high - The following pages have consistently been in the top 10 sites (out of several thousand) in Google searches - geriatrics, hematology, pediatrics, audiology, and pharmacy (out of xxxx sites!). We've been tracking 19 hmd pages over the last 3 months, and have found that their median ranking is consistently in the top 15 sites in Google searches. Other search engines that use reputation-based ranking also have the hmd high on their search lists - Northern Light seems to rank sites according to reputation, though not as consistently as Google; on one occasion it ranked the hmd pharmacy page as high as number 13, out of 600K sites. Edusearch searches for sites in the education (.edu) domain, and ranks them by reputation - Within its smaller (more restricted) universe of educational sites, the hmd ranks even higher than in Google, usually in the top 5 sites on the list. Other new search engines also rank sites according to reputation - Northern Light is not as consistent as Google in its ranking - On one occasion, the hmd Pharmacy page was ranked number 13 out of 600K links; on another occasion, it was not in the top 100. In December, searching for "pharmacy" produced a list of 600 K sites, with the Hardin MD Pharmacy listed as number 13; the same search in January, however, with about the same number of hits, didn't Until recently, using search engines ... X has been The overwhelming volume ... has often been a frustrating experience because the number of sites retrieved, especially for broad topics, tends to be overwhelmingly large. as measured by the frequency of linking to sites Search engines have been popular tools for finding information on the web for many years The hmd Google is a new se, that ranks sites by their importance, based on how many links there are to them. Previously developed se's, like Alta Vista and Hotbot, are often criticized for their lack of meaningful ranking of sites - Using them, a search for xxxxx retrieves thousands of sites, in random order, that's pretty useless. Google puts the important sites at the top of its lists, and so produces much more usable lists of hits. (Peer review, citation ranking) Interestingly, directory sites - human-produced categorized lists of links - tend to come to the top in Google searches - Because they're recognized by web-page builders as valuable resources, they're included as links on many pages and Google ranks them highly. (See "Google likes directory sites"). The hmd is given a notably high ranking in Google searches. Directory sites in general are ranked highly in Google searches, but the hmd is "at the top of the heap." When the hmd was started, in 1996, one of the criteria we used in choosing sites for our pages was the frequency of linking on other pages around the web. If a site is good, the thinking goes, many other Web sites will link to it. Google weighs the placement of links on each page, along with font sizes and capitalization. It has developed a loyal following among researchers for its knack of displaying highly relevant sites high in search lists." From g's pg, Why use Google? PageRank capitalizes on the uniquely democratic characteristic of the web by using its vast link structure as an organizational tool. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google assesses a page's importance by the votes it receives. ... Google ... also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." These important, high-quality results receive a higher PageRank and will be ordered higher in results. In this way, PageRank is Google's general indicator of importance and does not depend on a specific query. Rather, it is a characteristic of a page itself based on data from the web that Google analyzes using complex algorithms that assess link structure. *************** Frozen links >Exit Netscape. You have been given many gifts by God, and one of your greatest gifts is being able to discover new gifts, and at the same time to keep working on developing other, previously-found gifts. We could see at an early age that you have the ability to become totally immersed in a subject (clocks, trains, clouds, marigolds, presidents, coins). It's good to see that you still "keep fluent" with some of these early interests, as you continue to develop new interests. Things I learned from you in your toddler days, that I hope you'll remember - -Being outdoors is a good thing - You had the attitude that "going outside" was just a totally different and better experience than being "inside the house." I think this had something to do with your appreciation of nature. I hope you hold on to this. -Pain is a bad thing - When I had a toothache, you couldn't bear to look at my grimacing face, I think because it was just so ugly to see. What an elemental, and true, feeling - I hope you'll have a chance to relief the world's suffering in your life. -Your interest in clouds and the sky - Why was it, I wondered, that you noticed so much about what was happening up in the sky? Then I realized (how obvious!) that it was because you were short and I was tall, so you were constantly looking up at me to talk to me, and so, of course you were constantly looking at the sky! A neat lesson there, I think, about why God is often thought to be "up there" - Don't ever lose the gift of noticing God's world "up there." -You have gifts that I wonder sometimes if you even remember - Drawing - I'm sure you remember how you took off with drawing train locomotives (by the hundreds!) But how about plants? I remember how I was trying to "show you" how to draw a flower one time, with my own very limited drawing ability, and you accomplished what I was attempting, almost in the twinkling of an eye, and much better than I could do. Keep in mind the story you've heard me tell of how Grandma Rumsey, when she was a child sitting in Quaker silent meeting for worship, would see colored lights (halo?, aura?) over the heads of church leaders sitting in the front. Her father told her it was nonsense, so she stopped seeing them, and never saw such things again. ... Don't let "the world" convince you that those shining lights aren't there! We look forward to seeing you continue to develop, in college and beyond, and to seeing which of your many gifts you decide to develop. What an opportunity, to consider what God has in mind for you, how you can serve God and God's world most fully! It's hard to think about as an teen-ager, I guess, but sooner or later I think you'll learn to appreciate how rewarding it is to be around children, how much they are able to teach you things you just can't learn any other way. You have a gift for getting along with many different kinds of people, seeing good things in them, and being helpful to them. We look forward to seeing the many new people you'll meet in the next several years. We've enjoyed seeing you run, and we're glad that you're learning how important it is to your health - Keep it up! Family is starting place to go out from, and a place of the heart to return to: your friends will always be welcome at home, too. God knew you before we did, and knows you more fully now than anyone else. God will strengthen and encourage you for your life's journey. All you need to do is stay in communication, trusting and following God's guidance. **************** 101 Feature story - page 3 and sidebar - page 2 Let's talk about this more on phone ... The main problem with search engines is not that they produce too many links - It's that they produce too many links to be organized in a usable fashion. Large directory sites can continue to be quite usable, as long as they are well-organized. Consider replacing this sentence (page 3): "This human element allows for fewer ... relatively easy-to-browse subject resources." With this: Just as a large collection of books needs to be organized by librarians, with related topics placed together on the shelf, to be usable, Internet links need to be organized in logical patterns to be usable. Though computers excel at many tasks, humans still continue to have the advantage in using the pattern-recognition skills necessary to organize a list of Internet links. 102 [disregard] 103 page 4 "Karolinska ... includes many of the best directories from outside the US." How about this? - "Karolinska ... includes many of the best directory pages from outside the US." 104 page 5 I didn't mean that Neuroguide is the only directory site done by a physician. What I mean is that it's the only directory done by a physician that's the most popular one in its specialty - On the 38 specialty pages in the Hardin MD, the lists toward the top of each page are generally the ones that are judged to be most frequently linked on other peoples' pages (quality of maintenance and size are also taken into consideration in ranking sites on Hardin MD pages) - So my point is that if you look at the 38 subject pages in the Hardin MD, Neuroguide is about the only case in which a site done by a physician is number one (except for MedMark). 105 page 5 Family and Community Medicine Links Richard Streiffer, Tulane Univ http://www.tmc.tulane.edu/departments/fammed/links.htm Richard Streiffer , rstreif@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu (504)988-4700 106 Sidebar - page 2 Hardin ... sites are checked for several components. As for obstetrics and cardiology - most of the directories on those pages are part of umbrella-type directory sites. The ones that are single-subject are mostly done by nurses, or corporate/association groups. As I mentioned to you, the reason I chose the neuro site is because it stands out as being done by a physician. Could you suggest some other disciplines to consider? #4 - Sidebar, p 1 How about using the yellow pages metaphor from earlier in the story? ... Secondary sites are directories that list primary sites, much as the yellow-pages list specific businesses, categorized by type. #5 - Sidebar, p. 2 How about this? ... In choosing secondary directories for Hardin, we look at many sites in each field (for example academic departments and professional associations) to see which directories they link to. The ones that are frequently cited are likely to be selected for inclusion in Hardin, thus providing a form of peer review. "There's too much money chasing too few good ideas," says the vice president and director of Intel's Internet Health Initiative, a program to help medical practitioners and consumers find and convey health care information online. "Right now, the market is funding anything in this space," confirms Anthony Vendetti, a health care information technology analyst at Gruntal & Co. And indeed, the numbers are staggering. With second-quarter revenue of just over $1 million and losses of about $17.7 million, DrKoop.com (Nasdaq: KOOP) claimed a market cap of more than $566 million in August. That seems pretty high until you stop to consider that, in July, investor giddiness over Internet health plays pushed the company's market cap over $1 billion. What's more, even lesser-known players are raking in the dough. "I'm getting multiple calls weekly from investors," says Dr. Raj Lakhanpal, CEO of tiny HealthAtoZ.com. "It's gotten expensive to compete in the space, but it's also gotten easy to raise money." While it's tempting to sneer at this flood of cash, keep in mind that in the United States alone, we spend $1 trillion on health care annually, according to Vendetti. "It's the economy's biggest sector," he says. "The opportunities for winning big here are tremendous." Link-checking software and random manual spot checking is used to determine the connection rate of links included in the Hardin Meta Directory. The Hardin MD Clean Bill of Health Award is given to sites with superior connection rates of at least 93%.

All lists included in the Hardin MD generally have connection rates of over 80% - We look at many lists with lower connection rates, that are not included, so anything on our pages is much "above average" in comparison with all link lists on the net.

    * * * * * * * * * * HMD Origin What goes in? Maintenance - Evaluating Link checking Future trends Isolated/Digressions ***Origin ... Healthweb About the same time, I was just starting to get access to use statistics for our web pages, and seeing how pages that were of general interest got a lot of use. ... MHSLW parallels w hmd - started as a list that I made for myself - Having done that, it occurs ... why not put it on the web? ... other examples - clin-resources.html, bb.html, conf.html .... ###mhslw and/or ###clin-resources mhslw - good experience in list-keeping Healthweb In doing HW subjects, I saw that the first step was to identify lists that already existed (happened to do ophthalmol first - that's an area that is particularly strong in lists, including European) ###md-ophth - local, net Ophth also a good example of ... many subspecialties, some, for example, verging on optics/physics - Specialists do a better job of keeping these lists .... Then, in looking for lists, where to go ... MedWeb ... ###medweb Medweb has sections on its subject pages for lists ... but I found that it was somewhat difficult to use these ... -can't tell size of lists -some don't connect -don't include sections from other umbrella sites - Yahoo, Med Matrix, etc ... that's improved some, does now include MedMark, and hmd! .... more (good things) on MedWeb later .... I looked for other sources for lists (Med Matrix), and it became clear that list keepers (probably unconsciously) tend to give less attention to pointing to other lists ... and this is FINE! ... let hmd be the place to go for lists! Origin of the NAME ... Hardin MD ... I went into project of making hmd thinking that it would be much easier to maintain a tertiary source than a secondary one. That's generally been true. ***What goes in? .... How do you decide what to put in hmd? ###md-submit Tend to favor simple, text-based pages ... most of umbrella sites qualify English language - Feel uncomfortable with this, but don't see any alternative - if have French, why not Korean? Importance of annotations - At first, I placed importance on annotations, but I'm realizing that they are of mixed usefulness - too easy to just copy and paste boiler plate fr source ... and indeed, that may be fine and useful, IF DONE JUDICIOUSLY ! Must display in Lynx - Examples of sites changing at my request Loading time is not considered so important now - I learned very quickly, when I didn't honor a request from ac.uk because it was too slow to load ... list-keeper cried foul - unfair discrimination against ac.uk ... He was right ... 2 criteria for rating - # of links vs. percent connecting .... haven't decided which is more important ***Mirrors ... .. But I do favor sites that have mirrors sites ... ###md-path - 3 mirrors in lrge, including MedMark ... esp nice example because has European site w US mirror (on 4.18, former didnt connect, latter did) ... one thing in favor of Medmark ... maybe a digression here on Medmark All m's not t same ... term, and concept comes from FTP sites, where mirroring is apparently done automatically ... Web mirrors are mostly not automatic, have be done manually - Some m's are kept up to date, others aren't .... easier, probably, to mirror a simple, text, all on one page site. What parts of the world are most in need of mirrors? ac.uk certainly .... are there others? Strategically placed mirror sites - Where would they be? Note out-of-proportion use of hmd in other countries, esp Europe ... ... maybe because of mirrors ***Maintenance - Evaluation From the beginning, I have tried to assess the quality of maintenance of lists - Method I first used, and still use to some degree, is frequency of updating - A list that hasn't been updated in over a year is very unlikely to be very useful. The problem, of course, is that not all pages have update info on the page. There is also the header info date of last modification - This is available to various degrees in different browsers ... ... (digression) ... ... but is still not available for all servers (including ours!) ###sample lynx pg w header info *Best lists are ones that are used!* ... back to previous point - good lists arise from ones that are created for a purpose .... note that pages often arise from teaching a class... ***Link checking Now use link checkers to ck maintenance .. it's been gratifying to find that link checking generally has confirmed my previous impressions of maintenance. Link checker examples - Dr HTML, BB - get files for zip5 ***Isolated ideas ... Digressions Communities of users - Different "personalities" - i.e. emerg med - glitzy, heavy on graphics .... geriatrics - has changed from crude to excellent .... connection rates often consistently good or bad within a discipline - may reflect volatility of field ###sample emerg page Go to #1 - Tabor - www-911.html !! md-emerg is goo example of "the taming of the web" - formerly had more "wild and wooly" pages ... link checking has weeded out most of these Neurology very well-developed - awareness of "networks" in all senses ... Gastroenterology - no listservs ... communicating with listservs has been very effective - can really see correlation betw active listservs and web activity Describe, expand on process of distributing update announcements -Differentiate primary-sec-tert sources ... the latter 2 are "index sites"?? -particularly gratifying - bringing to bear the principles of info sci/lib sci on clinical medicine ###hmd_submission.html Interesting that librarians often do a particularly good job with organizing lists. ... know the importance of maintenance, "cleaning up" .... Can you fill me in a little? The concept is very >intriguing, if I am understanding it correctly. > Basically a link checker is a program that checks all links on a page to see if they are connecting - It just does the same thing you could do by clicking on all links on a page to see which ones connect. What it doesn't do is to give any indication of which links go to a page that says "URL has changed to ...." Because of this the BEST way to check links is manually, but with all the lists I keep track of this would be impossible. So link checking programs help me to get an idea at least of whether pages are being maintained ... I can pretty much say from what I've found that if the links on a page haven't been checked in 6 months, a good percentage of them will be bad. Generally I use link checkers as a tool to see how well maintained list sites are. I use two link checkers - Dr HTML http://www2.imagiware.com/RxHTML/ -Net-based, submit pages directly. -Works with Netscape, not with Internet Explorer, my regular browser -Very slow, one of your files might take 5 minutes Big Brother http://pauillac.inria.fr/~fpottier/ -Local workstation-based, for Macintosh -Fast, one of your files can be done in about 1 minute * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Norton Utilities - Disk Doctor 1.24.97 File Fragments An error was found in the volume bit map. Then, when you're finished looking at the link, simply close the second window, and the original list is still available, without having to reload it. * * * * * Eric Rumsey Librarian, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, University of Iowa Webmaster for Hardin World Wide Web files. Beginning in 1997 all Power computers will be shipped with the BeOS operating system in addition to the Mac operating system. This development will not affect ongoing discussions between Apple and Be regarding a possible acquisition or some other form of alliance with Be. (New York Times 26 Nov 96 C4) HELLO? IS THIS A COMPUTER? DO I PLACE IT NEAR MY FACE? Hudson Institute Fellow Mark Helprin thinks not. "Terrified lest their children be computer illiterate, lemming parents have pushed the schools into a computer frenzy in which they spend years learning to use Windows and WordPerfect. This much like 'Sesame Street,' which, instead of waiting until a child is five and teaching him to count in an afternoon, devotes thousands of hours drumming it into him during his underdeveloped infancy. But while numbers will remain the same, fifth-graders will, when they get to graduate school, have no contact with Windows 95. The 'teaching' of computer in the schools may be likened to a business academy in the 1920s founded for the purpose of teaching the telephone: 'When you hear the bell, pick up the receiver, place it thusly near your face, and say 'Hello?'" Because I've had the general impression that LWIS files, with their more elaborate graphics, load more slowly than Hardin Web files, I've done systematic measurement of loading times of both types of files The top half of the spreadsheet is Wintel stations, and the bottom half is Mac stations. Testing was done in two batches, columns C-I and L-S - -Columns C-I were done Sept 6-Sept 20, mainly in Hardin ITC. Wintel machines in the ITC are 486, Macs are MacIIci's. The only two tests done outside Hardin ITC are Wintel columns d and i, which are 486 HP's at the Reference Desk and in Jim Kohler's office. Columns L-R were done Oct 22-Nov 5, in various locations around campus - -Columns L, N, and P in Hardin ITC - Wintel - 486, Mac - MacIIci -Columns M and Q in the Hardin Information Commons - Wintel - Pentium Gateways, Mac 7200 -Column O in the IMU ITC - Wintel 486, Mac 7100/80 -Columns R and S in the Weeg ITC - Wintel 486, Macs - MacIIci's and 7100/66 Most of the points I want to make are on the second batch of testing, because the general network performace seems to have improved markedly, and because the second batch includes a wider variety of stations. All locations used Netscape 2.xx, except the Information Commoms, with Netscape 3.00. All Wintel machines tested are 486's, except in the Information Commons. During the first batch of testing, there were many network problems, indicated on the spreadsheet by notes - Error, Hangs Up, NetErr, and bp (broken pipe). I won't go into detail about these problems, since they seem to have passed for the time being. As I noted in previous message to Paul Soderdahl describing this testing, however, these errors occurred on both Wintel and Mac stations, only on files using lwis graphics (with one exception, cell I11). LWIS files - www.lib.uiowa.edu/index.html www.lib.uiowa.edu/info.html www.lib.uiowa.edu/commons/ I'm not including www.lib.uiowa.edu/gw/ in LWIS files - It uses different graphic theme, and it has changed between the two batches of testing that I did. Hardin files - www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/home.html www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/md-cardio.html Hardin (non-LWIS) files use only two graphic themes - The home page has large logo, and 2 other small graphics, and all other pages have only the small version of the logo. Other files- www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/hslibs.html www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/constitu.html These are not part of the general discussion of lwis/hardin files - They were tested because hslibs.html loads unusually slowly on Macs. This is a separate discussion, that I'm carrying on with Paul. The basic result shown by these tests is that Hardin files, with minimal graphics, load substantially faster than files with lwis graphics. Taking an average of the 3 LWIS files and the 2 Hardin files tested during the second batch of testing (excluding tests done in the Commons because its stations are so fast as to be unrepresentative of the general level of campus public access stations) the figures are as follows - Wintel LWIS - 11.2 Hardin - 4.1 (37% of LWIS) Macintosh LWIS - 14.8 Hardin - 6.4 (43% of LWIS) This shows that LWIS files take 2-3 times longer to load than Hardin files. Variation is greater on Macintosh computers than on Wintel, probably for two reasons - There is a wider variation of Mac models in ITC's, and also the speed of loading of files on Macs seems to be more affected by the quality of the network connection than on Intels. As an example of this see Mac columns P and R - These tests were done within an hour of each other, on Mac IIci's in Hardin ITC and in Weeg ITC, on different servers. The loading time in Hardin was substantially faster. In Wintel columns P and R, on the other hand, the tests done on similar machines in Hardin ITC and Weeg ITC had much more similar results. Older Macintoshes have particularly slow loading times. Weeg ITC is an especially good place to do benchmark testing on Macs, because of the variety of models available. In addition to the MacIIci's and Power Mac 7100/66's that I tested, there are also newer Power Mac 7200's. One observation that I haven't tried to quantify - On all Wintel machines in ITC's the LWIS files display very poorly. The monitors are not of sufficient quality to display graphics with the subtle variations in the LWIS header graphics. From the results of the small amount of testing I've done, I'd like to suggest that careful consideration needs to be given to the nature of the graphics on LWIS pages. Until the public access stations on campus have more powerful machines, I think we should be very simple with LWIS graphics. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To resume listservs - LISTSERV@SJUVM.STJOHNS.EDU - set hepv-l mail LISTSERV@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu - set cystic-l mail LISTSERV@UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu - subscribe medlib-l Eric Rumsey listserv@www.kumc.edu - set mmatrix-l mail noack listserv@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU - set gerinet mail majordomo@samurai.com - subscribe dizzinews rumsey@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu listserv@solutions.apple.com - SUBSCRIBE SEMPER.FI ERIC RUMSEY listserv@higgs.com - set netcloak-talk mail Web4Lib - TO SUBSCRIBE: Send the message "subscribe Web4Lib your name" to listserv@library.berkeley.edu http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Web4Lib/ * * * * * HealthWeb - xxxxxxxx (Annotated), CIC/yyyyy Univ HealthWeb - Dermatology (Annotated) CIC HealthWeb: Nursing, Univ Michigan HealthWeb: Public Health, Public Health Library, Univ Michigan (Annotated) CIC HealthWeb:Radiology, Indiana Univ.(annotated) CIC HealthWeb: Oncology, Indiana Univ (Annotated) * * * * * c-dungy@uiowa.edu abstractsYES xx of 7 * * * * * Karolinska Microsoft Motorola Apple computer * * * * * ncsa telnet 2.7 beta ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Telnet/Mac/Telnet2.7/2.7b4/Telnet-2.7b4-fat.sit.hqx * * * * * 6.6.96 - Checking HealthWeb libs for summer hours No sites Michigan State Penn State Northw - no - regular semester only - http://www.ghsl.nwu.edu/library_guide.html#Library_Hours U Ill/Chicago - no - regular semester only - http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/libinf/003.html#lhsc Indiana - find no hours at all - http://www.medlib.iupui.edu/ Purdue - Unclear whether sched goes past JUne 9, probably not - http://thorplus.lib.purdue.edu/library_info/schedule/index.html Michigan - through May 10 only - http://www.lib.umich.edu/libhome/Taubman.lib/tml.hours.html Minnesota - no hours - http://www.biomed.lib.umn.edu/ Ohio State - Spring only - http://bones.med.ohio-state.edu/hsl/library_hours.html Wisconsin - yes - http://chslibwww.biostat.wisc.edu/chslib/docs/general/libhours.html * * * * * Jim Duncan - Intro, perspectives on our charge 10 min Questions 10 min Classroom progress - Lee C 3 min Specs for MM and Info stations - Mac - Greg E 5 min Intel - Cliff M 5 min Mass storage - Zip, Jazz?? - Experience in Arcade - Jim L 2 min Discussion 15 min Curriculum software - Experience at Jefferson U - Jim D 5 min Survey of needs at UI Coll of Med - Barbara L 5 min * * * * * http://galaxy.einet.net/editors/Janice-Quinn/index.html http://lmc.einet.net:8000/editors/Janice-Quinn/index.html * * * * * * * * * * Thurs, 6.6 lee-c - 8-12, 3:30-5 greg-e- YES scott-e- YES, until 4:30 ed-h- NO lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- YES kate-r- NO bob-w- xxx Fri, 6.7 *** Looks good lee-c - 1-5 greg-e- YES scott-e- YES, until 4:30 ed-h- ??? lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- YES kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx Mon, 6.10 ***looks good lee-c - YES, all day greg-e- YES scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- NO kate-r- 8-10:30, 1-5 bob-w- xxx Tues, 6.11 NO NO NO NO lee-c - NO greg-e- YES scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- NO kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx Wed, 6.12 NO NO NO NO lee-c - 8-12 greg-e- NO scott-e- NO ed-h- 8-2:30 lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- AM YES, PM NO barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- NO kate-r- 8-2:30 bob-w- xxx Thurs, 6.13 *** LOOKS GOOD lee-c - 8-12 greg-e- YES scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- NO kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx Fri, 6.14 NO NO NO NO lee-c - NO greg-e- NO scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- NO kate-r- 8-1:30, 3:30-5 bob-w- xxx Mon, 6.17 lee-c - NO greg-e- YES scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- AM - NO, PM - YES kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx Tues, 6.18 lee-c - NO greg-e- after 2 PM scott-e- NO ed-h- YES lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- YES kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx Wed, 6.19 lee-c - NO greg-e- YES scott-e- NO ed-h- 8-3:30 lynn-j- xxx thomas-k- xxx james-l- YES barbara-l - xxx cliff-m- YES kate-r- YES bob-w- xxx * * * * * Wed, 5.29 ***9-10 good except for Cliff. I think this is t same as homelwis-10.gif, t one used for polling Files to work on are in folder \gifs\logo - -Folder \gifs\logo\arcade66 has orig files fr scanning at Arcade using ofoto - used hardinscan14 from this to work on in photoshop. This folder has some work w ClarisWorks. -Folder \hardinscan14 has work done in Photoshop In order to create logo in Photoshop (as well as I can remember)... -Made oval/box in hypercard, the right shape to fit image -copied this and pasted to photoshop file (template629) -then, from basic scanned image, hardinscan14, made copy, and pasted into template629 - Cleverly, Photoshop centered scanned image in box! -logo enhancement, 10.3.95 - Started from template629. Did editing of logo, filling in lines, etc.. Then, from template629 created file with 2 layers - logoLayered103 - Save this to make changes. Merged layers to make new logo put up today -logo work, 10.6.95 - Working on logoLayered106 - This is a much better file to start with than logoLayered103 - In the latter, building layer has much extra white space. 106 does not have this. Layer building44 has the good building, which I did work on. See tips below ... Use this file to make future version of logo - Work on some more to refine - Especially note if, with all three layers visible, there are any white pixels, and erase them (see tips) - These inadvertently created when I used white pencil instead of erase. -logo work, 11.17 - Worked on logolayered106 (this is still the one to use) - From it merged layers to make logo1117.gif. Ran this through clip2gif and Transparency, it's now logo.gif on the server. -logo work - small logo, 10.13.95 - logSmall1013_layered - has same three layers as large logo, but still needs work ... continued working on this, 11.21.95 - continue taking out color shaded pixels. 11.29.95 - File to work on is now logSmall1029_layered - created new layer - building3 - Saved merged layers, used for server, uses this - sharpened (blackened) lines, removed some shadowing. Layer building2 still has these. Consider using building2 and building3 together, or maybe just go back to building 2? Be sure to use GIFconverter (not! - see below). gif converter. first, to interlace graphics, before using Transparency ... -using GIFconverter - Do Save As - Under options, choice is Interlaced. -11.17 - use clip2gif instead of gif converter. Latter has dithering problems. Using Transparency program is a bit tricky ... Click on image and square corners until they are grayed out -More on using Transparency, 8.8.95, converting Iowa map in ihin file (iowa401.gif) - tricky business. With a large background, it's apparent that the way t progr works is - click on color of backgr that you want to be transparent - color palette appears and it should be set to t color clicked on - this is t one that will be transparent. I think this is what I was doing all along, but at first I was using version of file that was converted fr IBM file, using Photoshop. - This version had worked ok in html file, except that it wasnt transparent. Mark W said he had used an IBM transp utility on it, but it didnt carry through to mac. When copying this file to work on w transparency progr and pointing to it, it didnt come up transparent. So I downloaded the non-transparent file fr netscape and ran it through transp prog, and it was then transparent! -To create other colored logo versions... -download fr Netscape onto hd -open in Photoshop - With Wand tool, select color. This will only select color outside image. To select color inside image, choose Select-Similar. Use Edit-Fill command to change color -open w Transparency, work on file, and save. -For small logo - Folder hardinscan_Logo_Small\ - used file 2.5x.853 to convert in Transparency - logosm2.gif 8.3.95 - Creating e-mail ref graphic ... -Do the text first - This will create the size for box to be filled in - -After creating text msg, copy and paste it to a new file -The new file will have black text and white space around it -choose the color to fill around the text, using eye-dropper tool on logo -select the white space by clicking on it with magic wand tool -Do edit fill to fill white space with color. This will not change color of black text. Photoshop - Adding date to Whatsnew ... -From GIFs\whatsNew folder, open - Newtmp**.gif [on 10.3.95, made new template to use in future - Newtmp103**.gif - Layered version of this, to alter, is New3Layers_103] -Make sure to do SAVE AS of the Newtmp**.gif file. - ... With paint dropper tool, choose red color from palet, upper left corner of palet. Select text tool - click in blue space at bottom - In Type tool dialog box, select Chicago 10 pt, centered, type date -Use Move tool to place text properly -Make sure Mode menu is Indexed color, save file. -After doing change on 8.21, I used gif-converter to make whatsnewtmp interlaced. Make sure it opens OK in Photoshop next time. -9.14 - whatsnewtmp.gif should be interlaced - see if it's saved that way. 7.96 - Hardin meta directory logo - gifs\logo\md\logo \hmdlogolayer - Photoshop file w many layers, t basic file \hmdlogo79 - Claris Works file used as start, did shading in it, which dsnt transfer well to web. Has lettering for "HMD" -Numbers in layer names refer to RGB specs for colors -A bit of a pain to save merged layer pairs - have to do Save As for entire file, give it new name (I've used t rgb #), then trash extra layers, merge the 2 desired Additional steps - -Mode - INdexed color -File - Save As - Compuserve GIF -Open clip2gif, do convert -Didnt use Transparency, works ok. 12.96. LWIS format for Hardin Web \gifs \homeLWIS\homeLWIS.html - copied this folder to hardin-www/ -hardin1293.gif - logo without name header - use this to try diff fonts for header -hardin1294.gif - Palatino -hardin1295.gif - espysans - the one used Photoshop tricks ... first - clip2gif second - Transparency Quick and dirty shadow - -Clone selection - option-drag -Press 4 to lower opacity to 40% Selecting all non-white pixels - =Use magic wand to select white pixels, then delete. What's left is non-white! -To erase a pixel (erase being defined as making it the background color) - Choose Eraser option Block, instead of default pencil (pencil erases a blotch of pixels). Then, using block eraser, go to highest magnification. In file logoLayered106, note that background layer has nothing in it, not white. Be careful to make distinction between transparent and white. -To zoom to high magnifica is easy - With zoom tool selected, just drag mouse around small area desired. **************************************************************** "Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration to describe the history of the computer industry for the past decade as a massive effort to keep up with Apple." -Byte, December 1994 **************************************************************** Pick a disease you are interested in.
