The
History Department views the recruitment and
retention of minority graduate students as an
essential component of our work as professional
historians, as University instructors, and as
mentors to graduate students. At the professional
level, the history faculty is committed to increasing
the representation of minorities among historians.
At the programmatic level, the faculty wish to
achieve a more diverse population of graduate
students, and view this goal as one of the measures
of excellence for our department and the University.
By increasing the number of minority graduate
students we admit to our program, we begin the
process of increasing the representation of minorities
in the history profession. We also believe that
the recruitment and retention of more minority
graduate students will have an important positive
impact on undergraduate education because of
the instructional work of our graduate students.
By increasing the number of minority graduate
students in our program we increase the number
of minority graduate instructors, which in turn
will provide undergraduates with a more diverse
educational experience, and enhance the classroom
experience of minority undergraduates.
We
understand that there is a cycle to successful
recruitment and retention: as we increase minority
representation on our faculty, more minority
graduate students will be attracted to our program.
As we increase minority representation among
our graduate students, prospective applicants
(both majority and minority) will be attracted
to the diversity and the quality of diverse educational
experiences that the University of Iowa can offer.
The more successful we become at retaining minority
graduate students, the greater our impact on
the history profession.
