CONSTITUTION
OF THE SOCIETY FOR DIVERSITY IN HISTORY
PREAMBLE
This
organization is known as the Society for Diversity in History
ARTICLE
I
The purpose of the Society for
Diversity in History is fourfold:
- to promote multiculturalism in the History
Department and the University as whole.
- to foster community amongst
its members and to reach out to the local community.
- to serve as a liaison with the History Department
in its efforts to promote diversity and multiculturalism
within the department.
- to support the scholarship of all members.
ARTICLE
II
A. The Organization is open
to all graduate students interested in promoting
multiculturalism in the History Department and the
University. In no aspect of its programs shall there
be any difference in the treatment of persons because
of race, national origin, color, creed, religion, sex,
age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation,
gender identity, or associational preference, or any
other classification which would deprive the person
of consideration as an individual. The organization
will
guarantee an equal opportunity and equal access to
membership, programming, facilities, and all benefits
shall be open to all persons. B. There are no restrictions
on the number of members.
C. There are no membership classifications. All members
have the same status.
D. Membership is not revocable.
ARTICLE III
A. The officers
of the organization are:
- Co-Chairs
(3): The three co-chairs will perform all executive
duties including publicizing, calling, and chairing
meetings, supervising nominations and filling vacancies.
- Secretary-Treasurer: The
secretary treasurer collects and disperses
all organizational funds, administers elections, and
keeps a record of all organizational business.
- Departmental
Liaison: The general membership will elect one of
the co-chairs to serve as liaison to the History Department
on issues of multiculturalism
and diversity. Duties will include representing the
organization on departmental
committees that focus on diversity issues.
B. All graduate students who are members of the Society
for Diversity in History and interested in promoting
multiculturalism in the discipline of history
are qualified to hold office.
ARTICLE IV
A. Meetings
are held each month or when deemed necessary.
B. Quorum will be one-fourth of the total membership.
C. Meetings are called by the co-chairs or any
member of the organization.
D. Members will be notified about special meetings
one week in advance by
email.
ARTICLE V
A.
Elections will be held each year in the regular April
meeting and the new officers will assume their duties
during the first meeting of the following academic
year.
B. Members will be notified of the upcoming elections
at the March meeting.
ARTICLE VI
A.
The treasurer is responsible for all organizational
finances.
B. The decision to collect dues will be decided
by the consensus of the membership at the beginning
of the Fall semester. The amount of the dues will
also be determined by group consensus.
C. If the organization should dissolve, any remaining
funds will be spent according
to the wishes of the membership.
D. Upon dissolution state money and mandatory student
fees will revert back to the granting organization.
Group fees will be divided as stated in
Article VI, C.
ARTICLE VII
A. Amendments: Members will
be informed of proposed amendments to the constitution
by email and/or during a meeting.
B. Two-thirds of those members present
at the meeting are needed to ratify the
amendment.
C. All amendments or changes to the constitution
must be submitted to the Student Activities Board
for approval.
