Anthony Quiroz (Sept. 5-6)
The Department welcomes Anthony Quiroz. Professor Quiroz earned his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in 1998. His dissertation, “Claiming Citizenship: Class and Consensus in a Mexican American Community” was published earlier this year by Texas A&M Press as Claiming Citizenship: Mexican-Americans in Victoria Texas. In it he argues that Mexican Americans in Victoria embraced American ideologies in their quest for citizenship while simultaneously refusing to give up their ethnic heritage and opposing the exclusionary practices of their Anglo neighbors. Quiroz is currently the Joe B. Frantz Associate Professor of History at Texas A&M at Corpus Christi, where he teaches American history and Mexican-American history.
