May 7-11: Final Examination Week May 5: UI Center for Human Rights Teaching Workshop -- for college/university faculty, graduate students, and secondary school teachers on the subject of sexual violence in conflict zones. The workshop enabled instructors to incorporate information and scholarship on human rights and sexual violence in conflict zones into their regular course offerings. May 4: Last Day of Spring 2007 Classes Apr. 25: Faculty Workshop with Lisa Heineman Apr. 25: Wine, Cheese & Gender Meeting -- Dawn Davis, Women's Studies, spoke on her "Research on Love." Apr. 24: Dr. David Lightfoot, Assistant Director of the NSF Division of Behavioral, Social, and Economic Sciences, delivered a public address on "The Intertwinement of Fundamental Work in the Human and Physical Sciences." Apr. 22: "An Earth Day Afternoon" with Professors Jerry Schnoor and Burns Weston -- discussion of "Climate Change and Human Rights" Apr. 20-21: Public forum on "European Religion/American Religion: Why the Difference?" -- Participants included Hugh McLeod of the University of Birmingham, Mark Noll of Notre Dame, Dipesh Chakrabarty of the University of Chicago, Susan Thorne of Duke University, and David Hempton of Harvard Divinity School, as well as members of the University of Iowa Faculty from several disciplines. Apr. 20: History of Medicine R. Palmer Howard Annual Banquet -- Professor Christopher Crenner of the University of Kansas gave a talk on his most recent research in the history of medicine, "Beyond the Pale: The Changing Use of Race in Medical Practice. Apr. 18-20: Dipesh Chakrabarty, Ida Beam Visiting Professor from the University of Chicago, was hosted by the Department of History. A chapter from his current work.>> While on campus, Professor Chakrabarty's events included: a public lecture, "The Public Life of History"; a seminar, "Towards a History of the National Archives in India" on South Asian Studies; an informal discussion with our History students; and participation in the conference--"European Religion/American Religion: Why the Difference?" (Details of this event are below). Apr. 19: Pomerantz Lecture--"Towards an Ethics of Responding to Genocide Survivor Testimonies"--by Professor Jennifer Geddes. Apr. 16: The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Faculty Honors Celebration. Apr. 13: Matt Houlbrook participated in a lunchtime seminar and facilitated discussion of a paper from his new research project. He provided a public lecture on his award winning book Queer London: Perils and Pleasures in the Sexual Metropolis, 1918-57 (University of Chicago Press, 2005). Apr. 12: The University Lecture Committee, a University charter committee composed of faculty, staff and students, presented Native-American Rights Activist John Trudell with documentarian Heather Rae. Apr. 6-7: The University of Iowa and the Department of History hosted the 10th Annual Midwest Labor and Working-Class History (MLWCH) Colloquium--"Building Transnational Labor Alliances". The keynote address was provided by Benedicto Martinez Orozco (FAT). Sessions were held all day on Saturday. Apr. 6: Sidney Mintz (Johns Hopkins University) gave a talk, "Emerging Creole: Creolization and the Construction of Culture." Apr. 5-7: Annual Crossing Borders Convocation examined the vulnerabilities of labor migrants -- Full schedule of events. Apr. 4: Tom Good presented "Careers in Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity Employment" as part of the UI Center for Human Rights "Careers for Change" series. Apr. 4: Iowa Society of the Archeological Institute of America presented a lecture by Donald Eastman, "Did the Trojan War Take Place?" Mar. 29: Nick Yablon, Department of American Studies, presented "Trouble in Eden: Fantasies of Ruin on the American Urban Frontier, 1825-37." Mar. 26-31: Latinos in Action: Honoring Cesar Chavez -- For a full calendar of events. Some highlights included: talks by UI Professor Omar Valerio Jimenez and Professor Stephen Pitti from Yale University; a community panel and discussion with film-maker Professor Jody Swilky from Mar. 28: Trudy Peterson participated in the GHS Colloquium Luncheon Series -- "How To Successfully Navigate the Archives." Mar. 26: Omar Valerio-Jimenez provided a lecture on "Rio Grande Crossings: Remaking Marriage and Citizenship in the Nineteenth Century" as part of the Latinos In Action events. Mar. 26: The University Lecture Committee, a University charter committee composed of faculty, staff and students, presented Ambassador Joseph Wilson. Mar. 23: The European Studies Group hosted Andrei Markovits, Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German at the University of Michigan, who presented a lecture on his new book, Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America (Princeton University Press). Mar. 10-18: Spring Break -- no classes were held Mar 1-4: The Ob Feb. 28: Faculty Workshop with Mark Peterson Feb. 28: Juan Cole, Professor of History at the University of Michigan, participated in a workshop on developing Centers for Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Arabic Studies Feb. 28: Juan Cole provided a public lecture -- "The Iraq Crisis and the Future of America" Feb. 26: Juan Cole, Professor of History at the University of Michigan, gave a public workshop on the challenges of doing research in the Middle East. Feb. 25: The University Lecture Committee, a University charter committee composed of faculty, staff and students, presented Jane Smiley. (Englert Theater) Feb. 22: GHS Colloquium for Graduate Students -- "How to Prepare for Comps" -- Professors Mark Peterson, Lisa Heineman, and Shel Stromquist offered advice and ideas on how to negotiate the tangled web that is preparing for comprehensive exams. Feb. 22: Adriana Méndez-Rodenas, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, presented "Through the Green Threshold: 19th-Century Naturalists and the Romance of the Jungle." Feb. 22: Colloquium on Walter Benn Michaels’ The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality (sponsored by The Center for Ethnic Studies and the Arts). Feb. 16: Professor Anna Clark participated in a lunch seminar for faculty and graduate students -- "Beyond Governmentality". Feb. 9: "War Crimes Symposium" (schedule of events) -- sponsored by the UI College of Law journal, Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems, in conjunction with the International Law Society, the UI Center for Human Rights, and the International Programs Office. Feb. 9: Emily Thompson, Professor of History at Princeton University, presented a Sound Research Seminar Lecture -- "The Boys Upstairs: Projecting Change in the American Film Industry, 1926-1933". Feb. 7: Open House celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the State Historical Society of Iowa. This event launched a year-long celebration with the significance of Feb.7th being the day the Society’s constitution was signed in 1857. Feb. 7: As part of the Sesquicentennial celebration for the State Historical Society of Iowa, Historian Robert R. Dykstra gave a free public lecture -- "Race, Courage, and Discipline in Iowa's Heroic Age" -- focusing on debates about black suffrage in Iowa. Jan. 16: Opening of Spring Classes |
