Research
Elke Stockreiter joined the History Department in 2008. She was previously engaged in a research project on Islamic literature and networks in the south-western Indian Ocean at the University of Bergen, Norway.
Elke's research interests center on Muslim societies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Aiming to obtain a deeper understanding of these societies, her research merges the separate academic disciplines of African social history and Islamic studies. Her research explores Islamic law and gender relations in colonial African societies, as well as the institution of slavery and identity formation among Sub-Saharan African Muslims. Drawing on Islamic court records from Zanzibar Town, her dissertation discusses new evidence on female agency and the workings of Islamic law during the British colonial period. Elke received her Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in 2008.
