| What Becomes of History Graduates?
Students
who graduate from our department regularly meet the
admission requirements of the best graduate and professional
schools in the country. History graduates also find
careers in the health sciences, journalism, the law,
the ministry, and public service, including politics
and philanthropic foundations. While only a small number
of history majors become history professors themselves,
many become history teachers in elementary and secondary
schools. In fact, undergraduate majors can complete
the requirements for licensure in the state of Iowa
as teachers of history and social studies through the
Teaching Education Program. Because history students
acquire generically useful skills like close reading,
the interpretation of evidence, and clear expository
writing, and because they learn how to make persuasive
arguments, history graduates are always in demand by
commercial, financial, educational, and governmental
employers.
