Internship Opportunities

There are a variety of internship opportunities available to undergraduate history students. The list below includes a small portion of facilities, organizations, and foundations that interested students may want to consider. Browse the individual links to these opportunites for additional information and some testimonials about the experiences of former students.

University of Iowa Center for Human Rights encourages students to explore human rights internship opportunities in Iowa, the nation, and around the world.

Iowa Women's Archives, University of Iowa Main Library provides internships for students interested in Iowa and Women’s History. The intern will help to arrange and organize archival materials.

History News Network (HNN) needs interns to help put out the HNN magazine, which features articles by historians about current events. If you want experience in Internet journalism, editing, or graphics, this is a dream job which will look great on your resume and give you invaluable experience.

Jewish Women's Archive offers ongoing opportunities for interns, with projects such as: researching and writing historical content for an award-winning web site, creating and distributing press releases, planning events, and assisting with fundraising.

The Washington Center provides students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington D.C. for academic credit. Areas of interest might include Arts and Humanities; Business and Economics; Communications; Politics; Education; International Affairs; Legal Affairs and Criminal Justice; and Health, Science, and Environment.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum offers several programs to become involved in. As one of only twelve Presidential Libraries in the country, they offer some unique and interesting opportunities that are rewarding, educational, and fun.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History offers a competitive summer scholarship program in American history for outstanding college sophomores and juniors. The program is based in New York City.

Humanity in Action Organization sponsors summer programs on minority and human rights issues in Europe and the United States. The 2007 summer programs will take place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, Paris, and Warsaw.

Holocaust Educational Foundation provides the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge, under the direction of two senior faculty, of some of the principal sites of the Holocaust in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland.

The Chronicle of Higher Education offers internships, with the primary responsibility of reporting and writing brief features for the weekly print issue and daily-news articles for the Web site. Candidates must have experience writing for publication.

Internship Abroad in Wales -- spend a semester as an intern at the BBC, the Egyptology Research Center, or the Welsh Conservation Agency.

Research Fellowships in Early American History sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in cooperation with the Society for Historians of the Early Republic (SHEAR) and the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania will award several research fellowships to Liberal Arts Juniors and their Faculty Advisors.
