My research critically examines the formation of “self” within athletic contexts. As sports are a major cultural activity, individuals who participate in sport are influenced by a number of cultural forces and “take on” the identity of an athlete in many ways. This identity is shaped by the structure of the sport, the athlete’s role within the sport, and the cultural assumptions (regarding race, gender, body size, educational background, or socioeconomic status) within the sporting environment.
More specifically, my research, teaching, and professional interests bridge the widening gulf between traditional performance enhancement practices and research techniques within sport psychology and critical approaches to the construction of knowledge in the field. By critically examining how the work of sport psychology has traditionally been done, I inquire about different viewpoints about a “healthy self.”
