Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (MA and PhD)

Iowa's program in sport and physical activity is distinguished by its focus on psychological processes as they interact with social and cultural forces. Scholarship in this program advances the current understanding of behavior in sport and physical activity through the evaluation of theories that predict behavior, the modeling of physical activity patterns associated with health outcomes, and the testing of interventions that promote sport and physical activity. Inter-departmental study is central to the program; for example, students may draw from coursework in the departments of Psychology, Epidemiology, Counselor Education, and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

At the PhD level, this program provides students with the analytical and research skills necessary to teach and pursue scholarship at the university level. Within the specialization at the master's level, students select an emphasis in sport psychology or health promotion. Master's level students may go on to doctoral programs in sport, health, or associated fields or they enter health promotion, athletic, or sport professions in government, non-profit organizations, and business.
