Physical Fitness and Physical Activity Promotion 

Health Iowa-Student Health Service 

University of Iowa

General Overview:

Health Iowa is the educational branch of the University of Iowa Student Health Service.  Within Health Iowa, health promotion and disease prevention services are provided free of charge for registered students.  Services include individual and group programs targeted toward common young adult health issues such as fitness, nutrition, alcohol and other drugs, stress, and sexuality. 


Opportunities:

Practicum students will be introduced to basic physical fitness testing skills including the measurement of blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, aerobic endurance, and muscular strength.  They will participate in the planning and delivering of on- and off-campus fitness events.  Opportunities also exist for assisting with other health promotion programs such as nutrition, body image, substance abuse, and stress management.

Course Pre-requisites:

Pre-requisite skills and competencies for students include:

  • consent of instructor (Ms. Amy Fletcher)
  • a general understanding of health promotion (e.g., 028:075 Health in Everyday Life)
  • CPR certification
  • commitment to 32 hours of physical fitness-related outreach
  • the planning and directing of one fitness outreach project
