Group Exercise Leadership

Recreational Services

General Overview:

UI Recreational Services contributes to the well-being of the University community by providing recreational activities that foster an appreciation for the importance of leisure in our society. In addition to other programming, Recreational Services provides a wide variety of physical fitness and physical activity opportunities for students, staff, and faculty members


Opportunities:

This course provides continued education and practical experiences in leading a variety of group exercise classes offered through Recreational Services.  It also provides the opportunity to assist with the UI in-house Group Exercise Instructor Training course.   Students will be actively involved in Recreational Services Fitness Ambassador Program; a leadership program designed to serve as a liaison between Recreational Services Fitness and Wellness programs and the UI Residence Halls. 

Course Pre-requisites and Responsibilities:

Pre-requisite for students include:

  • the successful completion of 028:030 Principles of an Exercise Class or Recreational Services Group Exercise Instructor Training program or Group Exercise Leader certification through a recognized certifying agengy, e.g., ACSM.

Responsibilities for students include:

  • Role modeling and active outreach efforts in the Residence Halls.
