Health Iowa-Student Health Services

University of Iowa

General Overview:

Health Iowa is the educational branch of the University of Iowa Student Health Service. Within Health Iowa, health promotion and disease prevention services are provided free of charge for registered students. Services include individual and group programs targeted toward common young adult health issues such as fitness, nutrition, alcohol and other drugs, stress, and sexuality.


Opportunities:

Practicum students will participate in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of health fairs and health promotion events on- and off-campus. Experiences, tailored to the individual student's area of interest, address areas outside of physical fitness promotion. For example, students may deliver presentations addressing alcohol, sexuality, or stress management to classes, student organizations, residence halls, or community groups.

Course Pre-requisites:

Pre-requisite skills and competencies for students include:

  • consent of instructor (Professor Janz)
  • a background in health promotion or related field
  • upper division undergraduate or graduate standing
  • the ability to communicate clearly
  • exposure in developing and evaluating health promotion programs
  • professional preparation in health promotion
