(CHAMPS)

General Overview:
The goal of CHAMPS is to improve patient quality of life through education and exercise programs that reduce risk factors for heart disease. Educational topics include: heart disease, cardiovascular disease risk factors, exercise, stress management, and nutrition. CHAMPS multidisciplinary team includes: physical therapists, registered nurses, dietitians, social workers, exercise specialists, psychologists, and physicians.
Opportunities:
Practicum students will work with Phase 2 patients (outpatient monitoring) and Phase 3 patients (prevention and maintenance). Students will be exposed to all educational classes and will have the opportunity to teach a class. Other experiences include: assisting with patient exercise prescriptions, observing stress and cardiopulmonry tests, and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECG).
Course Pre-requisites:
Pre-requisite skills and competencies for students include:
- consent of instructor (Professor Janz)
- good interpersonal skills
- a background in cardiovascular physiology and exercise prescription
- ability to read and interpret ECG and graded exercise test results (optional)
- professional preparation in health promotion
