Tour of Glendale Cemetery in LeClaire
Sunday,
October 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
LeClaire, Iowa
For the past 170 years Glendale Cemetery has been the final resting
place of numerous characters from LeClaire's past. Buried among
the grasses and flowers are riverboat captains known for their
ability to navigate the dangerous rapids on the Mississippi River
and one of the area's first female doctors. Some of these figures
will be brought to life by community members and by students at
Pleasant Valley High School. The event is being held in conjunction
with the Apple Festival at the Mississippi Valley Welcome Center.
Alexander
Levi Heritage Project Exhibit
August

National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium
Dubuque, Iowa
This is a project that honors Alexander Levi, a French Jew of
Spanish origin who arrived in what is now Dubuque in 1833. The
exhibit features images, maps, photos, type text, recorded narrative,
music, video and audio to celebrate Levi, the first Jew to live
in Iowa.

Community, One Book
A series of forums on the book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of
a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. Beah, who was born in Sierra
Leone in 1980, got caught up in that nation's civil war when he
was 12-years-old. At 13 he was forced to enlist in the army and
commit acts of violence and cruelty. Today he is a member of the
Human Rights Watch Children's Rights Division Advisory Committee
and has spoken before the United Nations, the Council of Foreign
Relations and other groups.
