What is the Library Reading and Discussion Series (LRDS)?
The Humanities Iowa (HI) LRDS a program designed for community members to read and discuss books. LRDS are lead by humanities scholars and usually meet every other week. Previous LRDS average four (4) books. Contact our Program Officer for more information.

Who provides the books?
Whoever is hosting the LRDS. HI no longer supplies books.

What does HI provide?
HI provides honoraria and travel costs to LRDS scholars.

What does my library or group provide?
You provide:

The program coordinator must complete an evaluation form, collect a sample of feedback from participants, and mail these items to HI.

How and when my library or group apply?
Applications are reviewed as received. Please submit application at least two months* prior to the start date of the series. LRDS Application (.doc).

Will HI help me find a humanities scholar?
Yes. HI has a scholar directory that we are happy to share.

HI welcomes participation in our programs by local scholars. If you would like to introduce a new scholar to the program, please contact our Program Officer. Prior approval from HI is required for new scholars.

Who is a humanities scholar?
A humanities scholar is a "humanities human resource"--someone who is professionally educated and engaged in the study or teaching of at least one of the humanities disciplines, such as history or literature. A humanities scholar is trained to use the tools of the humanities, critical thinking and analysis, and to help others to develop the skill of humanistic inquiry through dialogue. He or she usually holds a masters degree or doctorate degree in a humanities discipline.
