What is the Library Reading and Discussion Series?
The Humanities (HI) Library Reading & Discussion Series (LRDS) is an engaging humanities experience. Community members meet with a humanities scholar in a public space to read and discuss books—usually two to four titles--covering a range of topics, from history, mystery and war; to women and the West. Groups typically meet every other week to discuss the readings. Most, but not all, LRDS programs involve multiple scholars. The LRDS is a great way to read and talk about humanities issues in a relaxed, interactive setting. Contact us for more information at 319-335-4153 or info@humanitiesiowa.org

Is there a library of LRDS programs or do we create our own series?
There is no library of programs. You may submit to us a brief proposal for a series you have in mind, including book titles and scholars. If you do not have a particular series in mind please contact us at 319-335-4153 or info@humanitiesiowa.org for ideas from our archives.

Who provides the books?
HI no longer supplies books.

Who is a humanities scholar?
A humanities scholar is a "humanities human resource"--someone who is professionally educated and engaged in the study or teaching of at least one of the humanities disciplines, such as history or literature. A humanities scholar is trained to use the tools of the humanities, critical thinking and analysis, and to help others to develop the skill of humanistic inquiry through dialogue. He or she holds a masters degree or doctorate degree in a humanities discipline.

Will HI help me find a humanities scholar?
Yes! HI has a scholar directory that we are happy to share. Additionally, HI welcomes participation in our programs by local scholars who may not be listed in our directory.  If you would like to introduce a new scholar(s) to the program, please contact us at 319-335-4153 or  info@humanitiesiowa.org. Prior approval from HI is required if a Scholar not currently registered with HI is to participate in the LRDS program.

What does HI provide?
HI provides honoraria and travel costs to LRDS scholars.

What does my library or friends group provide?
You are responsible for coordinating all events with the scholar, for advertising, and for providing books to the discussion participants. We also ask the program coordinator to submit a brief evaluation of the completed program, and to collect a sample of feedback from participants.

How and when does a library group apply?
Applications are reviewed as received. Please submit application at least two months prior to the start date of the series. Library Reading and Discussion Series Application
