Public Library Reading and Discussion Series
What is the HI Reading and Discussion Series?
HI offers funds for public libraries or friends groups to host reading and discussion programs in Iowa communities. The humanities reading experience participants read a selection of books, then meet, usually every other week, to discuss them with the guidance of a humanities scholar. Who is a humanities scholar?
A humanities scholar is a "humanities human resource"--someone who is professionally educated and engaged in the study or teaching of at least one of the humanities disciplines, such as history or literature. A humanities scholar is trained to use the tools of the humanities, critical thinking and analysis, and to help others to develop the skill of humanistic inquiry through dialogue. He or she holds a masters degree or doctorate degree in a humanities discipline. Will HI help you find a humanities scholar?
YES! HI compiles a humanities scholar directory on an annual basis, which we will provide to anyone for the asking. In addition, HI welcomes the participation in our programs by local scholars at community colleges and colleges across the state who may not be listed in the directory. What does HI provide?
HI provides honoraria for scholars who direct discussion sessions and travel costs at .40 per mile. Multiple copies of each book in a series will be lent to the library. HI also provides a discussion guide if one is available for that series. What does a library or friends group provide?
The library makes the arrangement with the scholar, advertises the discussion series, hosts the discussion series and provides a final report to Humanities Iowa that includes an evaluation and shows the cost-sharing provided by the library. How and when does a library group apply?
