The University of Iowa hosts the I-CAN organization. We are a group of student researchers who are proud to prepare non-partisan policy reports for officials in the state of Iowa. Professor Tom Rice is the director of the program and maintains a working relationship with several state legislators and other officials.

Legislators Visit I-CAN!

Several legislators have met with us in the fall of 2007 to discuss issues that may be on the legislative agenda next session.

Date -- Legislator --Topics

  1. September 5th -- Senator Joe Bolkcom -- Affordable Health Care, Credit Card Solicitation on College Campuses
  2. September 17th -- Senator Jeff Danielson, President Pro Tempore of the Senate -- Institutional and administrative challenges facing the legislature, Open Meeting and Open Records laws.
  3. October 1st -- Representative Dawn Pettengill -- Possible tax credits to businesses that employ skilled Iowans and are helping them repay college loans, possibly requiring seat belts in school buses.
  4. October 5th -- Jeff Kaufmann -- Health Care, Eminent Domain, Education
  5. October 22nd -- Andrew Wenthe -- Election process, Infrastructure Investment, Social Issues
  6. November 5th -- Dave Jacoby -- Tenant/Landlord Relations and Regulation, Issues to watch in the upcoming session. Local Iowa City politics.
