Faculty Mentors
Faculty members in all disciplines are encouraged to consider involving an undergraduate student in their research projects.
- One student may be nominated per session (The same student may be nominated for both summer and academic year awards with two separate proposals sumitted. However, two students cannot be nominated for the same session under the same mentor).
- Proposals that seek to involve students in intellectual scholarly work, experimental and laboratory-based research, and/or creative work in the arts are eligible.
- Applications that fully engage the student in the work, from contemplation of the work, through analysis and presentation of results, are of most interest. Work that can lead to an honors thesis, publication, or other form of recognition for the student is encouraged.
- Proposals that involve a student in only a limited aspect of a project, such as retrieving references or assaying samples, will not receive priority but may be funded.
- Regular opportunities for the student to interact with and be mentored by the sponsoring
faculty is crucial in all cases.
Because the ICRU Fellow Scholarship is project-based, ICRU will not indicate a required number of work hours or starting/finishing dates. Each mentor should work with the student to find a timeline that fits best with the project.
- For those that need a guideline, ICRU advocates for roughly 10 hours (academic year) or 20 hours (summer) per week of scholarly activity. These normally are conducted using the university calendar/semester guidelines.
