There are many ways to learn about and find research opportunities as an undergraduate student at The University of Iowa.
Remember - Contact ICRU for more information. We are happy to help you get started!

While we don’t know of specific opportunities (very hard to keep track of on a large scale basis!), we do have some strategies that can help you to look for a research opportunity on your own, one that best fits your interests and goals.
- Start by thinking about what you want out of the research experience and how it will benefit or guide your future academic and/or career goals. Write your thoughts down, it will help you articulate your goals when you talk others.
-
Visit departmental web pages to discover more about research across the colleges and departments on campus. Read about the types of research the department does, but don't forget to read the faculty profiles - these usually have their research interests listed (and where you'll find if your interests intersect).
-
Speak to others about your interest in research:
- The ICRU office, academic advisors, departmental honors advisors, faculty, and the staff of the Honors Program can help you narrow down your interests and find the right people to talk to.
- Don't forget your fellow students, especially within your major, who may already be involved in research and can share their knowledge and experience with you.
- You can talk to TAs if your classes have any and ask their expertise about the department and any opportunities. Graduate students can’t be your formal Faculty Mentor, but they can help direct you to faculty who share your interests and have open spaces in their research groups.
- Attend a "Getting Involved" session hosted by the Research Ambassadors. (these are held monthly during the academic year. Check here for dates.)
- Enroll in a course with a research focus – your departmental advisors can be most helpful in identifying such courses, as well as current projects in the departments.
