Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to get an Iowa One® Card?

If you currently have a University ID card you do not need to get the new Iowa One® Card. When and if you need to get a replacement card, you will be issued the new Iowa One® Card. If you are an employee or student with a hospital badge please note that by acquiring an Iowa One® Card you will invalidate your hospital ID for use in charging. Please contact an Iowa One® representative for your specific options.

Why open a UICCU checking account?

The optional Iowa One® Checking account gives you the ability to use your Iowa One® Card at ATMs or retail locations that accept PIN-based debit transactions.  Since the UICCU provides all campus ATMs, you can use them for unlimited fee-free transactions.

What are the three numbers on the Iowa One® Card face?

Your University ID is the 8-digit number directly under your name.  The number in the lower right corner of the card is the issue number.  The 16-digit number on the card is used for ATM and PIN-based debit functionality.

Does the Credit Union offer a way to transfer funds to my account from other financial institutions?

Yes, the UICCU's ChecksNet service offers instant credit to your account when you need money from home right away.  If you call the toll free number before 3 pm central time, you can make a $50 minimum transfer from any U.S. financial institution for immediate credit.  It's faster than a wire transfer....and it's free.  Visit iowaonechecking.com for more information.

Why does the back of my Iowa One® Card have two magnetic stripes?

The gold magnetic stripe is used exclusively for UI campus transactions.  The black magnetic stripe is used exclusively for ATM and PIN-based debit transactions.

Yes, but if you have not charged before at the UIHC with any card, you will need to go in person to Hospital Human Resources, C110 General Hospital, to have your card activated in the Hospital's system.

Can I charge anywhere other than the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) with my UIHC Badge?

As long as you choose charging privileges when you receive your UIHC Badge, you will be able to use the UIHC Badge to charge at any location on campus that accepts the ID card to pay for goods/services.  If you did not ask for charging privileges at the time of card issuance and now wish to use it to charge, contact Hospital Human Resources, C110 General Hospital.

What if I don't want to use my ID Card to charge?

If you do not wish to use your UI Photo ID Card for charging after card issuance, contact the Iowa One® Card Center, 3 Jessup Hall, 335-2716, to request "no charging." UIHC Badgeholders should contact Hospital Human Resources, C110 General Hospital, 356-2008. If you have not yet received an ID card, inform the office of card issuance that you do not want charging privileges on your ID card or badge before you receive an ID.

PLEASE NOTE:  Whenever you receive a replacement ID card, you must notify the office of card issuance so that the no charging request can be transferred to the new card.  If you decide to reinstate your charging privileges on your card, you must notify the office of card issuance as well.

Do I need a UI Photo ID Card if I already have a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Badge?

No.  UIHC Badges provide the same privileges as the UI photo ID Card as long as you choose charging privileges when you receive your UIHC Badge. You may NOT have privileges on both a UIHC Badge and a UI Card.

What if I start working at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) after receiving a UI Photo ID Card?

All UIHC employees are required to wear UIHC Badges while at work. If you begin employment after receiving a UI Photo ID Card and wish to keep the UI Card as your active card, you may request (in Hospital Human Resources at the time of issuance) that your UIHC Badge possess no charging privileges. The UIHC Badge will then serve only as a visual identification and you will be able to continue to use your UI Photo ID Card as the active privileged card.

If you do NOT wish to keep the UI card as your active card, simply request charging privileges when you receive your UIHC Badge. Your UIHC Badge will automatically replace your UI Card as your active privileged card.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE PRIVILEGES ON BOTH YOUR UIHC BADGE AND YOUR UI CARD.

What if I am both a student and faculty/staff member? Do I need two cards?

How should I take care of my ID card?

ID cards should be carried in a protective holder or wallet. Holes should not be punched in the magnetic stripe or bar code on the ID card. Close proximity to magnetic fields (TVs, stereos, microwaves, computers) may decode the magnetic stripe on the ID card. Stickers, pins, tape or other items may not be affixed to the ID in a way that obscures the wearer's photo, UI or UIHC logo, or any information printed on the ID.
