ELIGIBILITYAND REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must have (1) graduated from an upper secondary school (high school) or its equivalent; (2) a source of funds sufficient to pay for all expenses while in the IIEP (unfortunately, scholarships and financial aid are not available; and (3) some formal exposure to English language instruction.

The IIEP welcomes students preparing to enter universities or technical schools at either the undergraduate or graduate levels as well as business people and anyone wishing to improve his or her English skills.

English Ability Testing

Upon registering in the IIEP, students are given a placement exam to determine their proficiency in English. Assignments to levels of instruction are based upon the results of these examinations. Students are required to attend all classes in which they are placed. The TOEFL is administered at the end of the program. The IIEP does not regard TOEFL scores as the goal of language instruction. Therefore, the curriculum of the IIEP concentrates on the students' total language development, the only way to achieve good results on the TOEFL.

Length of Study

Students starting intensive English studies at the beginning level will normally acquire sufficient proficiency to begin academic work after three terms in the IIEP. Intermediate students usually require two terms, and advanced students normally require one term. The duration of intensive English study required for an individual student varies depending on personal motivation, level of proficiency, and aptitude.

Certificates

At the end of the program, the IIEP issues a Certificate of Completion to students who have attended class regularly and have received passing grades. Students receive official grades for each of their courses. These grades are recorded on an official University of Iowa transcript.

Visas

IIEP students must study on an F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2, B-1, B-2, or H-4 visa. Students admitted to IIEP will receive a letter of acceptance and a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) so that they may obtain an F-1 student visa at the nearest U.S. consulate. Students may study full-time on F-1, J-1, J-2, and H-4 visas. (F-1 students must study full-time.) F-2, J-1, J-2, B-1, B-2, and H-4 students may study part-time. (The IIEP considers applications for part-time study only after admitting all eligible full-time students; part-time students will only be admitted if there is space in the program.) Click here for information on visa issuance.

Admission to The University of Iowa

Students should be aware that admission to the IIEP does not constitute admission to The University of Iowa. Admission to the University requires separate application and qualifications based on high school and university transcripts, personal recommendations, and English proficiency.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who are otherwise academically admissible but submit TOEFL scores between 450 and 530 (paper), 133 and 197 (computer), or 45 and 71 (iBT) may be granted conditional admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To change their admission status from conditional to regular (a prerequisite for beginning study in a degree program), students must attain a minimum TOEFL score of 530 (paper), 197 (computer), or 71 (iBT). As space permits, conditionally admitted students may enroll in the IIEP for up to one year. Students without TOEFL scores and those with scores below 450 (paper), 133 (computer), or 45 and 71 (iBT) may also enroll in the IIEP; however, IIEP enrollment without conditional admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences does not imply or guarantee admission to an academic program at The University of Iowa.

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance coverage is required of all students attending the IIEP. Students will be billed automatically for coverage through the University unless they bring proof of comparable coverage to the IIEP office or the Benefits Office by the first day of class. Learn more about Student Medical Insurance.
