Free ESL classes for student spouses
Every summer (mid-June through mid-July), free classes in English as a Second Language are offered to spouses and other adult family members of University of Iowa students. Classes concentrate on speaking and listening, though help with other aspects of English is also available. Each class period is approximately one hour, and all classes take place during the daytime. Speakers of all ability levels are welcome. No daycare is provided. Classes are taught by University of Iowa graduate students who have completed specialized training in teaching ESL, and they are usually located in the lower level of the 450 Hawkeye Drive apartments in Iowa City.

For more information on these free summer classes, call the ESL Programs Office at (319) 335-5630 in late May.

ESL Tutors
The ESL Programs Office maintains a list of tutors who are specially certified to teach English as a second language. (Remember, not everyone who speaks English is qualified to teach it!) Private tutoring is $25 per hour. Please check with the ESL Office before you hire a tutor, as we can help you find one who best fits your needs.

All ESL programs at The University of Iowa are administered by the Department of Linguistics.
