IIEP Placement Procedures

The IIEP placement test has three parts:

1) a 10-minute oral interview with one or two ESL teachers

2) a 30-minute writing sample

3) a multiple-choice reading test. It has 50 items and takes 50 minutes.

Based on the results of these tests you will be placed in the appropriate level for each of your classes—reading, writing, grammar, and communication skills.

You will receive your placement results when you receive your class schedule, two days after you take the test.

If you think that your placement in any class is not right you should tell your teacher. Your teacher will assess your performance in class. In one week, the Coordinator and the teachers will meet to discuss student placements and make changes. You will be notified by either your teacher or the Coordinator the day following the meeting.

Progress From Level to Level

Continuing students are required to take the placement test along with the new students. Based on the results of the placement test, on information from your teachers, your grades and TOEFL score, you will be placed in the appropriate level. Generally, continuing students who work hard and receive good grades move up at least one level of proficiency.

Completion of the Program

If you are placed in the advanced level you will be preparing to begin your academic program. Students who have applied to The University of Iowa as undergraduates and who are academically admissible (needing only to submit the required TOEFL score) will be recommended to begin their academic program if:

1) their TOEFL score is close to 530 AND

2) they have successfully completed the advanced level (with grades of A&B).

Graduate admission requirements and decisions are made by individual departments. The IIEP Coordinator is happy to write letters evaluating students' English language proficiency and making recommendations regarding readiness for academic work.
