graduate program overview
The Intermedia Area of The University of Iowa School of Art & Art History offers a 2 year MA/3 year MFA program that encourages interdisciplinary research and production in time-based media, experimental video, new media and installation.
Graduate students are encouraged to work with the exceptional resources of the University including (but not limited to) Music, Creative Writing, Center for the Book, Cinema, Communications, International Programs and the broad range of programs in liberal arts and sciences, as well as other areas within the School of Art & Art History.
Intermedia graduate students participate in a weekly workshop to review research and creative work in progress while focussing on contemporary theory and practice. Workshop also organizes an Open House held each semester to showcase work of the program.
Intermedia graduate students are encouraged to engage in the cultural life of the university and community, participating in conferences, screening and exhibition opportunities and work with non-profit agencies.
In fall 2002, Intermedia launched "Intermedia|New Media," a visiting artist/scholar program. Visitors present their work and conduct studio visits. Chicago-based videographer and AIDS activist Gregg Bordowitz and intermedia artist Claire Pentecost were the inaugural artists in the program. Subsequent visitors include new media curators Sarah Cook (The Baltic, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) and Steve Dietz (Y-Productions, Minneapolis, Minnesota) and University of Northern Illinois curator Darrell Taylor.
